Here is what I have found. The war years were limited to what went into the vehicle. The paint, chrome, and accessories were changed/scaled back. From what I have read the war years hood emblem was unique to the those years. If anybody else has examples of other hood orniments for the period I would love to see the examples.Jimmie D.

The site above doesn't make the distinction of car vs. truck.
I have a 52 truck and when looking at that year, it doesn't look like what I would expect.

Jimbo,

My 57 had the bottom left bird on this page:
http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/page0288.html

At first, I thought it just someone goofing around but then I realized the situation.

My dad and I bought the truck at auction from the county. They had used this truck to pull behind their gravel graders so the grader operator had some way of getting back into town at the end of the day.

So there's no way they would have pimped that out with a hood bird from something else. It was a truck that got whipped mercilessly.

Here's two of the three grader trucks we got at auction. The '57 with the hood bird isn't in this photo. Sorry.

Hey Jimbo,

That's Southern Alberta back in the Summer of 1988.

That's the last time I ever laid eyes on those trucks. darn theives got to them and now the yellow ones are gone.

My heart is still broken after all this time.

I have copies of the pages of 55-59 chevy trucks out of the american spotters guide for trucks by tad burness. In these pictures there are no birds on any of the trucks. They are the chevys but I assume that GMC is the same. My dad has a 58 gmc long bed and he doesn't have a bird on it. He is in cedar park tx. I need to get him on here.

any hood ornament on 55-59 trucks was an option, dealer installed - the 57 had 2 "rocket" thingies that bolted to the wind split ridges, top left here , and the plane ornaments shown on that page for 55 & 56 were used on cars and trucks both - never heard of any specific to the 58/9
