i have a 51 chevy 3100 half ton truck with a 3 speed column shift i need to know the tranny type becaus i may need another one this one growls bad in low

I could not find a specific designation, but the '51 trans looks very much like the '55-'66 SM318 internally. I know that most internal parts are availible for that one, some might interchange, such as the first/reverse slider and the couter shaft.

pushrod, assuming that you have the original tranny in your truck, chevy reffered to them simply as a synchomesh transmission. The serial number is located on the side of the case at the rear edge of the trans cover. for your model year, it should have a "J" (year designation) followed by "N" if it was built in Saginaw, "O" if built in Muncie or "P" if it was built in Toledo. Then it would have numbers which would designate the sequence number of the trans.
