Sounds like a start to an old story I once knew... ANYway. I had quite a weekend, the voltage regulator (I hope) took a rest in my '54 3600 AND I decided to figure out why my speedometer didn't work and was 'stuck' on 90 mph. (Yeah, I doubt my Dad was running this old truck at 90 mph and it broke!). So, my question is this: Got my speedometer out and found that the gears in the rear of the housing were stuck WD-40 got everything freed up and spinning fine, but do I need to put any grease or oil in the assembly anywhere? | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 324 Member | Member Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 324 | any place metal moves against metal should have a very light small small drop of light oil. dip a nail or something like it into the oil and then touch the spot you want to oil so the oil hanging on the nail lubes the bearing point. if thats clear it will be the first time for me.

I usually use VERY light grease | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,383 Ex Hall Monitor | Ex Hall Monitor Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,383 | If you look at the housing where the cable connects to the speedo there will be an indentation. It's usually on the side or the top of the housing. If you look closely there will be an opening at the bottom that has what looks like cotton packing behind the opening. That indention is where you put light weight oil (sewing machine oil works well), which will soak into the packing and lubricate the areas that need lubricated as the speedo turns. It needs to be lubricated periodically.

I broke it last night trying to fabricate a needle, so with no worries, I took it completely apart. Maybe they changed the design, this one is a 54 and looks quite different than the 47 thru 53's I've seen. Now, I'm off to get another speedo assembly (good lord)... | | |
