Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 | How drastically have the engine mounts ( position on frame and the engine ) changed say from 67 to the present? Are most of the Chev 350 mounts the same? Question is, if i drop a 85 350 in my 1950 drive it, while saving pennies for a new crate engine, could i pull the 85 and drop in a modern crate engine? Big block? Thanks | | |

For example, I found mounts in the boneyard that fit both the 305 and 350 small block chevy's, but larger engine blocks likely have a different mount.
I cheated by looking at catlogues from companies that furnish high performance mounting blocks (e.g. PSC) to get a sense of their shape before heading to the boneyards. | | |

Nothing matches up to the cross member. On each side the mounts rest on the curved portion of the cross member and are out of alignment with the cross member bolt holes by 1/2" or better on each side. I don't think there's a way to mount them wrong, so can only assume they sent me the wrong ones. Anyone have any ideas? Can they be mounted backwards? | | |

You may have gotten mounts for the wrong year. The bellhousing changed in '55, I think, and won't match up to the earlier crossmember.

Any of the small block crate motors would work. | | |

The engine I had before I freeze cracked it was a '55 235. I'm using the same bell housing on the newer one, but I'll bet I ordered for a '53. Got to be the problem. Thanks for the info! | | |
