I have taken all the comments from the other two thread and have consolidated them in an update to this Restoration Kit tech tip. If anyone has any additional information, please let me know.

Also, if anyone is able to get any additional information about the GM Heritage Center, that would be great. I did a Google, but I kept getting other sites. Or GM sales sites. I wanted a link directly to the GMHC.

And if anyone has had any success find similar information for GMC, can you let us know so we can add it.

And lastly, for all the new guys that come on to the site, can you encourage them to VISIT this link and order their Restoration Kit. I think the more people we get doing this, perhaps the better response we will get.

Then again ?? Maybe they'll start charging USA customers too. Boooooooooo!

Hope not. Wish they wouldn't charge Canadians. Wonder if anyone can find out why?

Appreciate all this help guys.

Peggy

I don't know how much you have found out about the heritage center, but I do not think it will be much use to us. The center is not open to the public, it is mostly for GM use; meetings and research. Supposedly a lot of space is devoted to a car museum, with some very rare GM vehicles in it. I get the idea most of the information stored there is about the inner and past workings of GM. I wonder if they have that piece of wallpaper that Durant supposedly tore off the Paris hotel wall that gave him the idea for the bowtie emblem?

From a recent article in the Old Cars Weekly paper it says that there is upward of about 700 cars that they have. Starting some years ago putting one of each model up about every 10 years if I remember correctly but as Peg says if we can make enough noise we may get some co-operation?!! They recently used one of those cars to recreate the Cadillac racer that was something special....I forgot exactly what.

Well, I did it. I called Chevy and asked for a kit for my GMC. The operator was very nice, and is sending me some info, but stated it may not be accurate. "This is a service Chevrolet offers for Chevy owners. Some of the specifications may be the same." Operator couldn't seem to make heads or tails of my GMC identification number. We'll see what I get in the mail.

Well, the tech tip page is done . John did some creative magic on it over the weekend (rather than face the 110 degree sun).

Still hope to get something on GMC at some point.

Be sure to encourage newcomers to get their kit so that we can make sure this information stays fairly accurate. And if we ever get word on a GMC kit, we'll need to update it again. Just let us know.

As our Tech Tip main page says, "these are living documents" ... let's keep 'em alive. Alive ... ALIVE!

Okay, I have a question for all of you fellow stovebolters. Why is it why I decoded the VIN on my 1950 3800 Chevrolet through American Classic, it showed that this particular truck was built in London Canada, then when I called GM and requested a Restoration Package, I was told by the person that this truck was built in the good ole U.S.? Can anyone tell me exactly where this truck was built? 5HSB1500 is the VIN. By the way, just so you all will know, my Dad bought this truck brand new in 1950, and I am currently doing a frame off restoration.

hey stovebolt_six. the vin should read like this: "5" means Kansas City, Kansas assembly plant "HS" means 1950 commercial 1 ton truck, "B" means it was built in February, the numbers should mean the sequential number of the truck. Hopes this helps.

New guy. Dead tired, long day at work. 2 beers. drunk now. Scrappy bugger, me. What the hell is a restoration kit? Do I want it? I have a '51 3800. I will restore its condition gradually, but as to specs, i've made a change or two - I needed tires; original specs are rare and inferior - and I'll be making more as required. I do know trucks. This one is grossly undergeared for today's roads. Underpowered I can stand, but I will not abuse my equipment to stay safe in 50 mph traffic.

Did I really say Kansas City, Kansas? I think I meant to say Kansas City, Missouri. As far as the restoration kit, I've really enjoyed mine. It has a lot of good information in it, specs, color codes, list of rpo's etc. Go to www.chevy.tocmp.com and you can check one out online. This site has got a lot of good info in it for just about every chevy car and truck that is worth having!

Hi All,

There are some of the Resto-Packs Online for 1937 - 1954. Still has gaps in some of the info, e.g. missing pages, but still a work in progress.

If anyone has any of the missing Resto-Packs or pages, if you can scan them for the site, please email me: chevymanuals@yahoo.com

Cheers!

Okay, renewing this thread. We got an email last week that there is a GMC # -- 800-462-8782.

I just called them (The Customer Assistance Center) (after dialing the 800 #, I went to #4). Once you get a person on the phone, I needed to give him the year, make and model information. Then he needed the name, phone number and address. He wanted to know if I was a first time caller. I said no ... and mentioned getting Restoration Kits for the 1949 Chevy. He pulled up his file for our name ... but it was a different address / person. So, he added us in. I had to give him the VIN and he gave me a reference # for me to check back in a few days to be sure they have the data and are sending it out.

Well, he called back in 10 minutes because there was a problem with the VIN.

So ... anyone else try ... or willing to try with a GMC and see if we can update the Tech Tip to now include Chevy and GMC?

Post here and let us know the status.

And thanks to the fellow who gave the lead. No name but an interesting email address grin

Thanks all,

Peggy

I don't remember how long ago I called for the Chevy Restoration Kit, but I just realized I have not received it...guess I will have to call back. I did get a call from the girl that took my information about 10 minutes after I had talked to her with problems. Guess that should have been my first sign.

Called the number that Peggy mentioned above. Got hold of a woman in customer service and gave her my VIN number for my 1949 GMC. She asked "Is that the whole number?" Aftr some more discussion, she replied that they do not have any restoration kits for the GMC's, only for the Chevrolets. Goes back to what they told me a few years ago. Maybe somebody will have more luck.

Well fuey. The fellow called me back yesterday and said he cannot send me the information packet. Then he says there is no restoration kit for GMC, only Chevy.

That's funny, too because he said the VIN should be eight numbers and it was seven. John went and double-checked (and I have the registration papers), and it was seven.

??

I've got someone else to call about noon today about this. Will let you know what I find out.

Peg
