I wuz returning home and the downtown was blocked off for fireworks so I had to wait in a long lineup to go home. While in that lineup so the police could verify I lived there on a steep uphill road where I was going 4-5' every 10 minutes smoke started to come out the back sides but not on the tailpipes. I stopped the truck, flipped open the hood and yelled, "That's it!". Needless to say the lineup got all messed up.

Do ya think the smoke was from the gear oil or the engine. Both were hot. I'm all worried now that I way-overheated it and damaged something. The cops and everyone were asking me what's wrong with the truck and I said "Who's the idiot who decided to put the lineup on a hill...and what's taking so long?!!!" I told them flat out that the truck was not designed to move 6" a minute on an incline. Sorry if I sound mad....

Petty typical. I find that police and construction crews put more thought into their morning Tim Horton's order (Krispy Creme for those south of the border) than they put into traffic flow around work sites/road closures.

I suppose this little diatribe belongs in the Greasy spoon, but the post set me off!

I'm not sure I understand the previous post.

So I've been driving my truck for a week since the smoke and I've noticed that pulling away in 1st gear the truck tends to shudder unless I rev high. The whole truck shakes. My father believe that I overheated the clutch and there was some old oil in there. So, have I ruined my clutch? There is only minor slippage in 1st gear and the shudder. There doesn't seem to be any loss of oil but it does seem to be darker. I noticed the radiator fluid had gotten rusty coloured so I flushed and cleaned it out. Any thoughts?

If you used your clutch a lot on that hill,to keep from going backwards, there is a good chance that you glaxed it. Don't know if you can fix it unless you replace the clutch plate and resurface the pressureplate.

The smell from a burning clutch is is about the same as burning brakes, if that was the white smoke. You will probably have to replace the clutch disc, if nothing else. You may be able to drive it for a while if you are really light on the throttle and avoid hills.

One should always use the parking brake when starting on a hill to prevent excessive clutch wear.

If the shutter is from the clutch, which is likely, then you might try the method I used to cure the shutter on an old truck I once had.

I tied an old tire to my front bumber and eased the front end of the truck up to a large tree in my yard. I then slowly let out the clutch to cause it to slip. I don't know if this made the whole clutch glazed or wore off the glazed areas of the cluth, but it cured my shutter problems.

why not just use the break pedal or the e-brake . Just smoke the clutch.put the pedal to the metal.a few time it should be fine or its clutch replacment time.clutch should last 90,000 mi +++++.depends on the driver.NAPA has your parts if need be.maybe a clutch adjustment will solve your problem

Don't ride your clutch when you are on an incline. There is no reason why your truck can't handle a trafic jam.
