I'm trying to fabricate a mount hanger sorta thing, and I need to put a few holes in the "band" part of a hose clamp. Well I bought one, and tried to drill through it, no success. Tried to hit a nail through it, no success. Even tried to use a soldering iron to heat it up and hit a nail through it. No success.


This is a really thin hose clamp, so what should I use that will work to put a hole through it?

Hey guy try putting it on a piece of hard wood and punching thru it with a punch. Sharpen it nice and pointy on the grinder first.

What're you trying to hang? Those clamps are made from some tough material, you may need to check the projest metal section at the hardware store or farm store to get some thing that can be bent/drilled to make a hanger. If you a need to drill the clamp, try cobalt bits, they're more expensive, but they wil go through about anything.

Heat it with a propane torch.It should be easy to punch through then.

or get one of those plumber type hangers, not sure what you call them, they already have little holes in them,,not a clamp but you could probably put a small bolt thru them,, I used them on my rear lic plate to hang the topper plate, check my website, I cant for some reason post it here by its self

Well I tried punching through to the wood, and ended up with a bunch of broken nails.


Okay, here's what I did. I had a shaft radio, and I cut the dash for a DIN style rectanglar radio (slide in). Well the old shaft radio had a mounting bracket that held it up, so to keep the radio level.


On this new one, it's a totally different shape, so the mounting bracket won't work. I was gonna try to use a hose clamp and "hang" it from above, to make it level.

Don't have a torch, but I've got a punch, I'll try that.

I had the same thing with an underdash unit in my '53. I had a roll of the plumber stuff Joker is talking about. Used it as a ground aswell. Its just a band with holes punched in it. Should be able to find it at any hardware store.

If you can't punch, and you can't drill, the next option would be to GRIND! A little Dremel with a stone or carbide burr would buzz right through that sucka...I think!

Hardy go to the hardware store and get a concrete nail. They are cheep and will punch throu it.

Yep, use that stuuf that Joker and Colin are talking about. Save yourself some aggravation. It's inexpensive, I believe.

Plumber's strap or look in the metals section at your hardware store. You can find flat bar with holes in it. Cut it to length, bend as required. Sounds like you are working for the hose clamp, rather than it working for you. I believe it is made out of spring steel. Get something made out of mild steel so that you can work it. That spring steel has already been worked so it is REALLY hard to work it more, as you've found out.

Joker,Colin the plumber type or plumber stuff is called plumbers tape. Realy good stuff for radio support brackets. They use to send you a 10" piece with the radio.

it's called "perforated, galvanized PIPE STRAP" , and no decent shop is complete without a roll on the pegboard

lol, that's ironic...i had to have surgery when i last worked on my truck cause i got metal nail bits in my eye

I got too close to some ragged sheet metal as I was useing the air chisel to cut out the old cab corner. Consequently I ended up going to get stitches.The wait at the hospital was so long (4 Hours),that when they removed them 2 weeks later ,the cut simply opened right up.Then it just closed up on its own eventually,next time I just won't bother going.Didn't my truck know ,I was just trying to help it?

super glue works pretty good at sealing up some cuts,,beats the wait at the ER,,brian

If all else fails a good heavy duty zip tie like you use to tie wiring works wonders.

Duct tape is the only way to go.

Well to follow up this post, thought I'd throw in the classic story of what happens in EVERY truck story.

After all that, like 6 trips to the hardware store, many confused hours of sitting in my floorboard, and i finally got it all cut, hung, and all was good....


I found the bracket.
