I've got a '62 Suburban.
I liked the '60 and '61 quad headlight grilles better, and found one.
On Dynacorn's website, they list different radiator core supports for '60/'61, '62 and I think '63.
Now, in a local junkyard here, there is a truck I parted out that has the knee-knocker cab ('60-'63). It didn't have the grille when I got to it, and the little data plate on the driver's side kick panel was missing.
How can I ID that truck, to see if I should grab the core support from it to mount the '60 grille in my '62?

Thanks,
-Brad

Are the fender emblems there?

Every year had a different emblem.

LMC has them all displayed here .

In 60-64 trucks per the vin decoder in the tech tips section of this site the very first # in the vin code is tghe year of manufacture,

If I read the post right, the door panel VIN plate is missing? I know the 63 and later trucks used an alternator instead of generator, but odds are either would be long gone if the truck's in a junkyard...

The vin plate is on the A-pillar--held in place by a pair of screws!
The little data plate, down on the kick panel between the driver's door opening and the vent, is what was missing.

I'm somewhat suspect of the vin tag on the a-pillar...
The truck is a torsion bar suspension, so that narrows it down to '61 and '62, correct?
If I could just narrow it one step further, I'd be perfect!

Any other tips?
-Brad

I don't know if this helps, but the backing plates on the front brakes are changed between 61 and 62. The '61 plates have a ring welded to them that encloses the inner grease seal. The '62 plates do not.

If the VIN tag is there then you can tell the year from the first number I think. I know that one of the numbers in the VIN will tell you what year the truck is...good luck.

If it has a torsion front suspension it is a 60-62.

61apache, he's trying to differentiate between a 61 and a 62.

Check the top of the frame ~ 12" - 18" from the front. There should be a vin stamped into the frame. There is on my '63

I just went out and checked...the numbers on the frame are a partial VIN, but enough to match to the VIN plate on the cab...and they are located more like 24" from the front of the frame, on the top driver's side right beside my alternator. Once you have the correct VIN run it through the decoder mentioned above.

D'Oh!
The first digit of the vin (held to the truck with sheetmetal screws) is a 1. I scraped through the gunk on the top of the frame, and couldn't find any stamped numbers. I may go back with a wire brush tomorrow.

The emblems on the cowl/fender fillers are '62. They're orginal to the truck.

Shame, too--I went back to the truck today, and someone had taken all the front sheetmetal off, and stacked it in the cab! I'm gonna get there tomorrow and see if I can find those numbers off the frame to see if I can nail it for sure. The hood is a '62-up, but not original to the truck. (Paint doesn't match the lovely frog green that the truck was originally painted, and subsequently painted over.

I fell like Junkyard CSI!

Brad,

On my truck, it's on top of the drivers side frame rail, about where the front crossmember bolts up.
