I noticed some grey paint under the red on the valve covers of my recently purchased 1966 C-10's 283. Is grey the correct color of this engine?

Also, where would I find the date of manufacture on this engine? I want to know if this is the original engine.

Thanks for your help.

The serial number will have a year code on it.

I'm not sure if there's another date code anywhere else on the engine.

Look for it near the water pump.

As for the color, I'm sorry. I can't help you there.

Brandan.

I found the serial number, and it appears to read as follows.

FO6I3WE

I assume that the F is for Flint, Michigan, but I cannot figure out the rest of of it. Does anyone have any ideas?

mkithpn.

I looked in my 1966 owner's manual, and it says that the 283 is grey. It looks like I might have a matching engine! grin

A few years ago (June 03 I think) this was a thread on here. I had a 66 C20 with a 327 at the time. From my research, in the early 60's, Chevy pickup engines were blueish grey (Chevy engine blue), cars were Chevy engine orange. I painted my engine that blue. Looked weird since we are so used to seeing orange. Especially since my truck was dark green and the engine compartment was flat black.

This list states that the 1966 truck 283 was painted blue/gray.

Most rebuild/repaints would most likely have been painted the readily available passenger Chevrolet Engine Orange.

It would be interesting to see a 1966 factory brochure with truck and car engines side-by-side (these types of brochures are available in earlier years and make it clear that the colors of car and truck engines were different).

I'm going to have to pull out my magic book and see what this means.

I agree that the F is probably for Flint.

The O is probably a year code, and the 6I3 is probably a 613, or June 13, the casting date. The WE will probably be the use. (e.g. Car vs truck, installed options, et cetera)

I'll let you know if I find out what the heck this means. My magic book is at home, and I am not. grin

Okay...

I found it.

F=Flint
O6I3=0613 (or June 13)
WE=1965 Truck 283, with a 2bbl carb 175hp, C-10 to 25.

Looks like to me that you've got a numbers matching powerplant. grin

I had a 1966 327 that was alpine green . I had a local paint store mix it for me. I may have the paint code, if this should be the color you are looking for.

Thanks a lot guys. I'm really excited about this truck. It evidently is all original, and only has 49,390 miles on it. Not bad for $1,750.00. grin

Here are some links to the color "alpine green".I just took these pictures.I was told years ago by a restoration shop,this is the color of a 1966 327 pick up engine.I included a pic of the can and code.I am not absolute about the color,just went by what a professional said.Hope this helps.

bowtietim.

According to my owner's manual, the 327 was green, and the 283 was grey. Therefore, your 327 apparently is the correct color.

The color is indeed a blue gray. This stock color is available from the Filling Station.
