Well I found a 64 1 ton dually with a 283 and a 4 speed with a propeller shaft brake for $500.
Its got some rust areas and it doesn't have a bed, but I have a flatbed for it. It runs very strong and brakes good. It has a higher end rear-end that was scooting pretty fast in third gear. Has a new heater core still in the box. I didn’t see any smoke The guy says he has had lots of people look at it, but nobody wants it because there is no bed.

The way I see it... clean it up slap some paint on the frame do a little body work, put the bed on it, drive it around for a while and sell it for $1,500 or so. Or swap out the 283 and rear-end with my 235 in my 59 and sell the 64 for around $1,500 or so. I think the motor and rear-end would be worth at least $500

Does $500 seem like a good steal? I'm a younger bolter still pretty green. The 64 needs a glove box, cleaning and rust scraping, a bed and other odds and ends.

$500 for a running truck is a pretty good deal, period.

I paid $600 for my '61, knowing that it probably didn't run and would need a frame-up resto.

Yea I could register it and put on some temporary tail lights and drive it like it is until I put on the bed.
Is their any laws that say you cant drive a truck without the bed?

That would depend on your state. I believe here in IL, the requirements are bumper, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights.

If the truck did not have a bed, it don't need one to be driven, but it will need Tail/turn/stop lights, and mud flaps.

A 1 ton would not have a bed, and a pickup bed in most cases will be too short of too long depending on the wheelbase on the truck, a long bed pickup is 127" (8' box), one tons came in 121", 133" & 157". They did make a 1 ton step side pickup on the 133" wheelbase, it had a 9' box and single tires on the rear.

$500 was a vary good deal...

I bought this one for $300 back in 1985, and it was worth every penny.

Why can' tI find those deals here in Virginia?! Any stovebolt truck under a grand is worth buying in my world.
