Hi Fellow Bolters,
I have my "BOLT" insured with USAA because I drive it daily but as of yet I have not obtained coverage for my Chevy or Plymouth. So who should I look at? I need to get this insurance soon because summer is on its way, and I would really love to get the cars out and DRIVE them.

Got mine thru auto owners, my regular insurer.
Had to state the value I wanted it insured for along with pictures. Found the rate to be comparable to the better known insurer of collector cars Haggarty. Try them and your regular insurer. I only pay about $185 per year for $13,000 collision with a lay up of 6 months for our lovely northern weather.

Here\'s a whole list for you. We use Haggerty for our '49 1-ton. The seem to be good and a good rate. We had J C Taylor before that (with the '39) and they were good. When we went to renew about three years ago, the JC Taylor people had a more complicated process and we were turned down. So, we just feuey with it and went with Haggerty.

I will probably end up going with Haggerty when I get mine on the road...

Mainly because I can drive over there and raise holy hell if there's a problem. grin

Their building is about a mile from where I work.

Cliff, from my firsthand experience with USAA, run like hell from them!!! They jacked me around after the '03 tornado with both my '96 Cummins and my '70 Ford F-250 (sweet truck, it was!!!), that I had to take them to the Oklahoma state insurance commissioner through arbitration to get them to pay anything on the Ford. It was appraised by TWO independent classic car appraisers at $8,200 from one and $8,550 from the other. They wanted to give me $2,120 for the truck, despite reams of documentation of receipts, history, and work, pictures before and after, blah blah blah. The documentation didn't mean squat to them. They claimed they could replace the truck for $2K, to which I replied "prove it", which they couldn't, of course. They ended up giving me just $4,000 and I kept the remains of the Ford. They were a bonafide PITA that could care less about the paying what the truck was insured at. I had my other classics (four) insured through Haggerty, with two being totalled and two being repairable and had zero problems with them, on the other hand.

Mainstream insurance companies claim to say they'll insure a classic for a driver, but don't believe it for a second that they'll pay you what your appraised value of the truck is, even if your policy states that. I'm sure there's an adjuster or two on this forum that'll tell you I don't know what I'm talking about or that I'm the exception to the rule here. Don't believe that for a minute!!!

After I cancelled USAA once the payouts for both trucks were finished, they had the audacity to send me a letter saying they "missed my business and please come back", to which I replied with a two-word response, letting them pay the postage, to boot!

Screw USAA.

I switched to Grundy from Haggerty 2 years ago. The same coverage for 1/2 the cost. Most of my club have it. It is restrictive and for collector cars only. The same as Haggerty. I have 2 collector cars insured, one for $35,000 and one for $15,000 and pay about $310 yearly for full coverage and no deductible. They have a nice website where you can apply.
