For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Well yesterday I got my new torque tube u-joint, get it all installed, and the darn truck won't start!!!
I'd gone out and started it it once a week or so while it was sitting back there, never had a problem.. always fired right up.. now today, it just dosen't wanna start.
Battery charge........... check points gapped & clean........ check plugs gapped and clean..... check rotor and cap clean.........check getting fuel.............check
If I crank on it, it just kinda cranks and pops here and there.. if I put my foot to the floor while cranking it tries to start.. almost like it somehow jumped time just sitting there or something.
Im going to let it sit for an hour or so with the breather off.. maybe I flooded it or something.. who knows.. but what annoys the hell out of me is that it would fire right up the whole time I was driving it.. even when Jed was out during thanksgiving he said, "Hey.. that fires right up, don't it?" and now..... BLAHHHHH!
I'm an income tax return check away from putting it on a trailer and having somebody drop a 350 with a 4 speed tranny and a new rear in it and calling it a day.. and if that check is in the mailbox today, that might be just what I do!

If not your #%*& fiber timing gear is gone. This can be double checked if a compression guage reads high on some cylinders and zero on others. Sure hope not, but possible. Sometimes a pull will fire one up if things are wet and the starter won't kick it off. Good luck

There's new rear end, 12 volt system. Why stop there once you are at that point, how about dual master cylinder, por steering, see where I'm going? I like all that stuff, but is it really worth it? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,682 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,682 | Well I noticed it was making some kind of "cling" noise.. so I pulled the valve cover and cranked it over.. one of the pushrods was just kind of rattling around, and not pushing the bar thing that actuates the valve on the other side.
Made some adjustments, then with the valve cover still off, I reached down and kicked the starter, while using my other arm to hold the throttle open full.
She roared to life.. so I put the valve cover back on, hooked the starter pedal return spring back up, hopped in the cab, stomped on the starter and..
..rurr.... rurrr..... ruh.
darn battery is dead!!
I have the other 6V battery on the quick charge.. i'll try that one in a little while.. maybe i'll get the thing to move before the sun goes down.

Put the charged battery in, jacked around with it for another 5 minutes or so, and now it fires right up every time again.
Might have been a combination of that valve not getting open/closed right and that gunky carb, compounded by not having started it in a week or so. . i dunno, but it's runnin' like a top again.
But I can still appreciate why some folks opt to switch to modern motors.. man I was close to just putting it on a trailer and taking it to the mechanc and saying, "Don't call me till she's runnin low 9's at the track!"

Be careful what you say in the presence of the green machine. You'll hurt the feelings of that poor lil 216, and she'll surely leave ya pounding the pavement.
You let me know anytime you want to get rid of that engine, and I'll come up and get it. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 | What makes you think a V-8 would be any more reliable? Most of the worst problems I've ever had with engines were V-8 hosted. Now,go give that sweet ol' truck a kiss on the hood and tell it you're sorry for the bad things you thought about it.
