This business of moving gas tank from behind the seat to under bed of 1950 3100. I've seen lots with filler neck in floor but I want mine in rear panel, hopefully without C notching the frame. I just don't trust mysefl with holding that gas nozzel over my beautiful bed wood.Would appreciate anybody's experience with type of tank required to solve this delima.
P.S. Can get after market tank for under $200. fuel cell not in the budget.

bluenoser, the filler neck on the '47's and '48's come out the right side of the bed side, below the bed floor. Have you considered this alternative?

I saw a truck at a car show once that had a fuel filler door fabbed into the trailing edge of the driver side rear fender. it looked really good.

I've got a fuel cell in my '46 Panel, looks like this,

Stainless steel, a friend made it for me to my specs to fit in the frame rails.
I mounted it behind the rear axle and ran the filler neck into the left rear fender like this

I don't know about pick-ups but I didn't have to notch frame just a little sheet metal pinch weld area and have a good down flow angle too.

BLUENOSER, go to my community webshots there are pictures of my tank install with the filler in the drivers side fender. a bit pricey for the cap, 60.00 and 60.00 for the flanger but the cap can be surface mounted. bothe from airride technologies. ron

Have mine in the bed and haven't made a mark on the urethane in the last 3 years. just was a easier place to put it.

If ya gotta move the fuel tank, then i'd say putting the filler in the fender with a flush "door" would be the best way to go.

Putting the filler in the bed is a quick way to go about things, but what would you do if you had a full load of gravel and then noticed you needed gas?

you'll have to scroll down the page after you open the link ... forget the logon bit at the top.

I used the same old filler neck but turned it 180 degrees, fitted (welded) it w/ an external surface plate that attaches to the outside of the bed. The filler neck hole is below the bed wood, there is enough skirt to allow for this. cleaver those chevy designers . . . . It fits at a good angle for the gas nozzle. I then used a 2'' piece of exh. pipe and reduced it to fit (welded to) the 1-1/4'' stock tube. it now flares out to 2'' and the new 16 gal tank has a matching 2'' inlet, coupled it w/ a rubber gas filler hose. Tank has an anti roll vent. The tank is supported by 4 - 1/2'' rods that are screwed into 4 welded nuts under the bed cross steel supports. Everything is double nuted, or lock-tited. The bottom tank supports are 2'' that cross under the tank mounted w/ some sheet rubber.

I kinda like the exposed 'old stock' look of the filler tube in front of the rear fender.
