Does anyone know of a good source for a GMC exhaust system? I need all pipes and mufflers. It is a dual exhaust on a '72 1/2-ton with a 402 engine. NAPA doesn't have it and can't get it. I don't want to pay an arm and a leg to have them fabricated. Midas can fabricate for $550. Give me a break. Any good sources would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hy Rick, my Walker book says the exhaust pipes are N.A., a couple of different mufflers and only the left tailpipe are still listed in my book, and it's old. Do you want the numbers I have?

if i was you i would shop around at some of the smaller shops in your area. i got the exhaust on my 61, 235 stock manifold single pipe, done for $200. i had some people quote me up to $400 but I hunted around for a few weeks and found another guy who needed my business more and we struck a deal. anyway, i always have more luck when i go through the smaller guys. they typically care more about their customers, cause they have fewer, and in my experience their work is equal to larger shops. i have been burned once or twice, but in the long run the small shops have been a better resource than the big boys.

that being said, if i had a truck with a 402, i would find someone to run me a nice set of straight pipes, w/ no mufflers, that dumped on each side in front of the back tires with a cool slash tip. that would look pretty trick and it would make the job cheaper because their would be no mufflers, and a lot less pipe. just my $.02

You definitely need a hole-in-the-wall type of muffler shop. A decent set of duals should set you back about 200 to 300 dollars. Forget large chain stores like Midas.

My local muffler shop gets $250. He does a nice job & uses heavy gauge pipe. I like 2 1/4 pipes & stock mufflers Or long glasspacks on a big block. Not loud but a nice rumble at idle. I bring em straight out the back with crome tips.

dont know what exactly your lookin for but have you tried summit or jegs ? i had a 74 chevy 1/2 that had headers on it i bought a kit from summit that had every thing but the mufflers ran all yhe way out back over the axle simple to install . might still have something like that. maybe flowmaster or one of the other companies might offer them also . might be worth a check see.........dave

All good advice guys. I had it done at a local shop. $295 for dual system front to rear with 2-1/2" pipe and very heavy gauge steel. I'm very happy with it and it sounds great. I'm convinced the small shops are the way to go.

I agree with these guys. Forget the chain store muffler shops. The "small" guys can get it done for $100 to $150 per side. I like to use the aluminized pipe. It stays shiny longer and doesn't rust out as soon. You can even get some economy performance mufflers that will work OK for a daily driver. Have them connect the two sides of duals together after the mufflers for better balance.
