I was given this trans and I want to see if it is a good trans to use for my truck project along with a 327 v8 that I have.

I was told it is a saginaw 4 speed out of a car. It has a cast iron case (not aluminum like a muncie). It has two grooves in the tail shaft.

I found numbers on the right (passenger side) main case as follows: there was an A15 by itself, an NF C4 and GM 338935.

I found numbers on the rear tail shaft section:
6261884 and GM3.

I found numbers on the shift cover plate: 4GM6261886 and a weird looking RP (maybe engraved or stamped in, not raised letters like the others.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Twin 1960 4X4, I went to that site but I can't find a place where I can look up my numbers to find out what this trans is from.

The site says that it is better to follow their descriptions and count the splines and bolt patterns. They said that even GM didn't know what numbers ended up where.

There are about nine sites on Google that offer the same information.

You might call one of the Transmission shops and ask them to assist you in identifying yours.

Just another opportunity to meet local talent that may help later.

I got one too. Mine has the two rings on the input shaft.

If this works for you and you can get free lift tickets at any ski resort let me know. I used to live in Telluride and sure do miss skiing.

Twin1960 4X4, thank you that helps. I will get with a local trans shop and see what they tell me. I they don't think it would be a good trans to use then I will skip that idea and go with the auto trans. I would like to stay with a stick shift just for the nestalgia.

Do you have any experience with these transmissions?

Tim (bessie) I don't ski any more and don't have any connections with anyone who does. Sking has gotten so expensive. I would rather put money into my truck. Besides, the older I get the longer it takes to recover from those bad spills. I can't stand the safe the bunny slopes.
