ok guys, im back. *peanut gallery growns* anyway, i have a rather pressing question. for those of you who dont know, i purchased a '63 chevy 1/2ton abt. 2 weeks ago. now, the problems were that:
1. its 1 hour form where i live
2. its not insured.
3. its tag was 3 years old and
4. the tail lights didnt work. these are just the MAJOR probelms for getting it home)

i have gotten a new tag, and i have someone ligned up in the town where the truck is located that works on old trucks that wil do a fix on the tail lights( until i get it home, atleast) but my problem is insurance. im 15, and the truck was only bought for $1,500.
now, i have broused the insurance links on this page and called and gotten quotes from companies, but the problem is the minimum limit for value of the vehcle you insure.(seems to be $3G to $5G to even $10 G minimmum) my only alternative is to go with regular vehicle insureance for almost $1,200 a year.
and my appeal.... doesn anyone know a company that will take subjects like me? im sure some of yall are or have been in the same situation.

Any chance you can have one of your parents add it to one of their policies? That would probably be about the only way you'll get away without taking a major beating.

Even then, I would imagine that with a 15 year-old listed as a primary driver, you're gonna git hit-up for alot more than what you want to pay.

I don't know what insurance runs in Alabama, but I can tell you $1,200/year doesn't really sound that bad, considering you're a new driver, single, and a male to boot.

My first car, a 1955 Chevy was $1,500/year just for liability and that was back in the late 70's. In the early 80's I lost my license for 6-months. When I got it back, the truck I had at the time was costing me about that every 6-months.

Sorry I don't have any better ideas but... As far as insurance goes, you can only hope that you become 25 and married real quickly.

You might give some of those insurance broker types, (like Progressive) a shot. Good Luck.

That or list someone else as primary driver and get them to drive it home.

And/or get it towed. That will be cheaper than all of the above. And/or get someone who can rent a truck and trailer to trailer it home. Once its fixed up then you can deal with the ins issue.

I agree with arnswine towing that beautiful BOLT will be more money wise, Then you can do what ever it takes for insurance.

Alex, I'm not knowledgeable about AL laws but here in GA you have to be 16 before you can get a drivers licence. You don't mention whether you are a LEGAL driver as yet. When my now 17 year old son got his drivers licence I sat him down and told him I would cover his vehicle (92 Olds) for liability insurance on my policy (Geico). I explained to him that if he were in an accident that was his fault or received citations and his insurance costs increased that he would make up the difference out of his pocket. About 6 months of driving on his own he rear ended someone at a red light and was cited. His insurance jumped from $140 every six months to $540 every six months. A couple of months back he brings home a citation for speeding, 75 in a 55. Next insurance renewal is coming in March and he is sweating blood wondering if it will go up again. I've told him that Geico may just cancel coverage for him and then he will really feel the sting. Bottom line is if you aren't yet a licenced driver you won't be able to get coverage for your truck anyway I'm thinking. If coverage is actually needed for you at this time you may want to have a talk with your parents and work something out with them and their policy. Unless you are going to be driving the truck right away I would do as suggested and tow or trailer the truck home. As I told my son, "welcome to the real world of vehicle ownership", and "buying a vehicle is the EASY part, keeping it on the road is the hard part".

Alex,I go along with the wise folks that say to have it towed.You don't know the hidden problems until you get to working on this truck hands on.Better to work on it in your driveway then on the side of the highway.My first car was a 1950 Chevy 2 door(car)we called the moth.I towed it home on a rope in the rain.What a trip. thanks. im starting to think trailering it home i the best idea. i havent checked much on it uspention wise, so trailering sounds more appealing. and thanks 4 the clarification on the insurance. and yes, i have a permint, but i dont get my 16 year old licence until june. (more fun. been car shoping for the last few days) thanks again.

well, i talked to my mom, and she said that the man who was gonnna fix the brake lights was also gonna check the truck over throughly. and she wont let me get it towed home.... grr. anyway. ill just have to hope it makes it home in one piece. thanks for the advice.

I would just throw PLPD on it and then cancel the policy once I got it home. Then I would get the truck ready to where it was good to go and reinsure it at that point.

Most of the "Classic" insurance places linked here on this site requires a "Classic" or "Historical" registration with your state. Be sure to look into this.

Also: how did you get plates for it without insurance? Alabama must not have that rule...

Don't pay anyone to fix the tail lights...have it towed home, then you can fix the lights yourself.
This way, you save by not paying to have the lights fixed plus you learn how to work on your truck. Win/Win situation .

Alex, I'm a tad (!) older than 15 and I've also had insurance problems... My problem is that most insurance companies won't do business in Mass. Like you, I looked into the links here but the big problem is that most of the companies here will only insure if you gargae the vehicle and limit the miles you drive. Meaning that if you plan to use your truck as a daily driver then they won't insure you. So being young is only one factor.
