For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 33 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 33 | Hello fellow Chevy truck fans! I'm new to the stovebolt page but love it. I live in Northern Alberta, Canada and would like to pick up a project truck. I have a line on a couple of old farm trucks,(47-54?) and one says Chevrolet 1700 on the hood. I haven't seen that number mentioned in the description of any trucks on this site before. Is that a unique to Canada number? It looks like it would have been a 2ton or so. Also I've read that the cabs are the same size on all the different trucks but fender/hood size is different. In what ways are they different? Are they longer, wider and taller? It has 5 bars in the grille just like a 1/2 ton and doesn't look wider when I compare my digital pic to some trucks on this site. Anyway my goal is to build a drivable truck with little or no cost using any and everything that I can scrounge for free. The trucks are free so I thought I'd use that as starting point and see if I can keep it that way. I guess I'm up for a challenge. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | yes it's a Canadian Chevy model number, tho I haven't seen a list that gives weights/sizes above 1400, which is the US 3800 series all the truck cabs and hoods are the same - the only difference is the fenders are a bit wider on the 1.5T and above, and the openings are cut a bit larger to the front to clear the 20" tires free is good! if you can get some pics up somewhere for folks here to look at, they may be able to identify just which model you have - or at least we'd have more pics to look at, which is a favorite past time here Bill | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,101 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,101 | Hy Chevy Nut, It's a Canadian truck, if it doesn't say Maple Leaf on the side of the hood then it must be a 51 or newer. All Canadian 1700s were powered by G.M.C. engines probably a 248cu. in. 1700 translates into 8400 in American I.D. in the later fifties, but there is no American equivalent model in the early fifties,[advance design years] We called them 3 tons, hope this helps | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | chevy nut, I'm not the expert here but somewhere in a recent thread someone mentioned the difference in the hoods, like the corners at the cab on one is more pointed on one but rounded on the other. Look around in paint and body or other forums and you many see the post. If I remember correctly there was also a picture posted. This is THE BEST truck web site EVER! enjoy and happy hunting. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 452 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 452 | Here\'s the thread to which Alvin is referring.
