I have been looking for a clock for my 54 for some time now. I have noticed a few clock housings sell on ebay from time to time. (still not sure about spending the money). Does anyone know if the 53-54 car clock insert is the same as the truck?

I have a few pics I have acquired, and they sure look the same.

To my knowledge they are the same clock unit. I have also seen where TPI or Dolphin also have a clock unit available but no housing. In a past vintage truck mag there was an ad in the classified section of a guy who had some housings made and was selling them. I know I have the issue at home (had a gold bronco on the cover) and will look tonight and send you info by PM.

You can buy an awful nice watch for what they want for a NOS Factory clock.

fer about 2 bucks you can get those little digital stick-on jobs, battery included - last a couple years, so yer cost to know how long you sit in traffic, or how late ya are, could be cut to about a buck a year

Actually the clocks are cheap, it the darn housing that they poke your eyes out on.

Also thought a tach might look good in the housing...

I have never seen a tach that would fit in that small housing. Other guages such as oil press, temp, fuel, etc would look good evenly spaced on the dash. The quad guages though handle that nicely also.

Autometer makes some very small tachs.

I think a tach would look good as well.

What do those 54 dash clocks sell for?

The '53/'54 car clock works in the truck housing. I have seen them sell on eBay for $25-$75, depending on condition.

The \'54 truck clock is wind-up (and has a light bulb). There were two car clocks, one wind-up and the other electric (both with light bulb and both fit into the truck clock-housing).

Some people think the winder on the car clock is in a different position than on the truck clock. I think they were the same part number and the winder was just came in a different location from the manufacturer.

Call me crazy (not you Fred) but I just got a housing on ebay. One step at a time, now I can look for a clock.

The 53 & 54 car clock element was identical to the ones used on the 54 55.1 truck.

A wristwatch is OK, a cheapo digital stuck to the dash is OK But...

Nothing beats the real thing.

why would you buy the housing with-out the clock...that is crazy

The three clocks in your first photo all have the widing/adjuster at 9 o'clock. Your last photo (right above this reply) has the (winder/)adjuster at 7 o'clock and you seem to be saying that it is the electric clock. Have you seen an electric clock with an adjuster at 9 o'clock (both my wind-up clocks have the winder/adjuster at 7 o'clock)?
