hey guys.(and galls) im the new kid on the forum, quite literally. i am 15, and have, through the correct allignment of the planets, movements of the oceans, and begging of my mother, bought a old chevy pickup. i have read this site for a long time, and always wanted to join, but, due to the fact that i never owned or even knew many people who own old GM's, didnt join the site.
But, i am now, as of this afternoon, the proud owner of one red(origionally that blue-green)'63 chevy stepside. i have no hands-on experience with old vehicles, nor does anyone in my family or friends, but i have been reading magizines for so long i feel like i know more than the alot of young people. so, i will be checking this site, usually begging for help, and adding my humble(a.k.a. usually wrong or long-winded)oppinion. so, i hope yall (i'm from alabama, so yall is a word) bring me into the stovebolt family, a nutty, witty, helpful one at that!

If wrong or long-winded opinions were a problem most of us would be in trouble at least some days!

figgured so about the opinions and long windedness;) and picks, well, i dont currently have the truck in my possession. i found it in my grandparents home town, abt 1 hour from where i live, and it needs some stuff( like a new tag, brake lights, and insurance) before i make the long voyage home. and with the 6 cylinder/3 on the tree, i wont be going anywhere too fast. so, while it sits, someone in their home town is gonna look it over, and give me a second oppiinion about what all it is gonna need. hopefully, i should get it home in one of the next 2 weekends.

Hy Alex, and a very warm welcome to this sight, and to this wonderful adventure that we are all involved in. Whether we restore, hot rod, or upgrade, working on older vehicles is a fantastic hobby. I personally have made more friends than I can count through this hobby. I'm very glad to see a young and obviously intelligent man entering this hobby. Welcome and congrats on the truck! I am 17. I started this great hobby when I was 15 with an old truck and no experience aswell. Trust me now, you will have the coolest ride in the high school parking lot. This site is an invaluable resource. Another invaluable resource is the shop manual for your truck. I was skeptical at first, and actually restored my whole truck without one, a fellow stovebolter lent me one and I have now bought one. I urge you to get a shop manual because it has EVERYTHING! So welcome, and please show us pictures! Have a good one.

welcome new truck owner. i still remember the first day that i got my 61, i was 20, 23 now, and it was a great day. congratulations and welcome to a fun and extremely useful site. buy the manual it is a great piece of info to have on hand. good luck on what is sure to turn into one kick [censored] pickup.

i thank all of yall for responiding( all youz guys for the northerners) and its good to see some alabama folk representing here too. i'm from tuscaloosa, abt 1 hour south of birmingham(for all you out-of-towners.) i will get some pics up as soon as i get the truck home(or i am around it long enough to take pictures) i am blessed with a neighabor who is a huge do-it-yourselfer(he finished his basment by himself, and wired all you could wire without a electrical lisnece in his new home hisself, and builds anything himself type of guy with a general knowledge of everything)and he has promised to help me. but first, i have to get the '63 Buick Riviera out of my garage.( another story, but i may have it sold by tomorrow) then i can bring my truck home. yea!

You bring back memorys. I started out with a 1948 Chevy truck when I was 13. Worked on it more than I ever drove it. Start colecting tools and old timers that have worked on these old trucks and you will have the time of your life. Become one with your old truck and it will tell you if it needs something. After a while you will know what every knock and rattle means. These old trucks are timeless keep it origanal and whole.

thanks. i plan to keep it relatively origional, but if i drive it alot, it may get a few modifications. but only ones that allow me to drive it even more.( taller rear-end gears, a overdrive unit) and they will be out of sight. and mandates by my mom: 3-point seatbelts, dic brakes, small stuff (like getting the brake lights to work again

I had my first bolt at age 15 and promptly tore it down to the frame. I quickly found that disassembly is much easier than re-assembly.
Enjoy your truck; Build it just as you like and have fun.

Shoot, when I wuz 15, I was riding a 49cc Velo Solex (bike with engine on front wheel) to school and back. Well... it beat walking and went 50 miles on a quart of premix!

I fell in love with old pickups (61 Chevy) when I was about your age. Not a day goes by that I dont think of working on that old truck,(cuz it was always broke). I wish I still had her.

I started on Cushman scooters when I was 12 and got into cars at 16. Welcome to a lifetime hobby and good luck with the truck. I am presently working on a 64 Stepside.

Welcome Alex, i started getting interested in old trucks a while before i could drive it all started with my first vehicle a 1978 Chevy K10 suburban after that my first classic truck was a 1955 Chevy 2nd series 3600 (3/4ton 2wd) i imediately tore it down, ever nut and bolt was disassembled and now it sits in piles stopped working on it to work on a 1970 Chevy CST/10 instead, just remember to lable mark and bag everything so you remember where it all goes cause my 55 gonna be a pile of parts for a while, i'm guessing heres a link to the gallery My 70 Chevy (i just turned 18 begining of November 2005)

Perhaps Jihn or Peggy will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe ownership or affiliation with a stovebolt is required for membership. We should invite all those lurkers out there who feel the same reluctance as Alex, to join and introduce themselves. I believe fans and other supporters should be encouraged to join the site. After all, more eyes out there for parts and vehicles has to be better, right?

Welcome to the board! I was 15 when I got my 66 stepside from dad and have had it four years now..which I'm 19!Been working on it on and off and now she lookin pretty!Still a work in progress....

thanks. yall all have cool( or soon to be)trucks. and i thought about joining a while back, but i wasnt that interested on cnevys at that time( i had not seen the light, and was still interested in old f*rds and early hot rods before i realized what i really wanted and needed.[and could afford])glad to see all the young guys too. thanks again.
