Were is the vin located ,did they use the orig eng, # or the body tag # which is
Model # AC101 Serial # 12225
Are there any repo vin tags or ID tag availible
by the way this is in Calif so anyone know what they used as the vin # .Was it the engine # or the model /serial # Thanks Chris

Chris - I think your 40 is going to be like my 46. There are no "vin" numbers on them. There should be a metal tag on the right side of the cowel. Which from the numbers you gave I assume is still there. This is what the CHP will use to register your truck.

If you don't have the cowel tag the CHP will issue you a "blue tag" with a new ID number for your truck. This is what I had to do, even though I had the numbers off the ID plate (but no plate).

I did order a repo plate and stamped my numbers into it but the blue tag is still the registration number.

George ,Thanks for the info, I figure the tag I have is what it should be.When you say right side of the cowl is that looking at it or sitting in the cab looking out.Is the AC101 -12225 The correct body tag #s. Chris

'right side' = passenger side

Just after the passenger side door, on the cowl area under the hood, there outta be a metal plate that has stuff like the vehicles GVR, MFG, etc.. on that plate the vehicle serial number should be stamped.

I've heard of California 'VIN' numbers being the original serial number, the engine number, a combination of both, or a totally unique number all together.

Guess it just depends on their mood that particular day, but it seems like in all cases, a new plate was issued with the number on it.. in some cases, the original mfg tag was removed and the state issued plate installed in its place.

The ID tags are different on GMC and Chevy. The original GMC ID tag was on the interior firewall above the transmission in 1940.
GMC ID tags are not reproduced.

So is it a Chevy? Post some pics if you get a chance.

I had to blue tag my 1940 3/4 ton. The CHP was actually very good about it.

It's a GMC and I sent in pictures to be posted unless there another area to quick post pictures.
I have the ID with the model# and serial # and will just use that as the vin # pluss I have the orig 1940 plates for it.Chris

Man, what a score. That's definately is a 40 GMC. A rare vehicle and looks to be in excellent condition. You done good. Very, Very Good.

dad6timz - You can get the chevy repro ID plate from most of the vendors. I think I got mine from Jim Carter. You'll have to stamp your own numbers into it.
