I guess the latch is not extending as it should.
I have new stricker plates and wondered if they are not adjusted quite right.
I have seen springs you can buy to cause the handles to pull back horizontal.
Maybe that's the answer.?
Any ideas? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 144 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 144 | Sounds like the springs are weakening, I'm presently doing the doors on my 46 which is probably the same as your 40 and the latch spring on the passenger side is much stronger than the drivers side. I gave both mechanisms a good soak in WD40 and it seemed to cure the problem.Also check the leaver that goes from the inside door handle to the mechanism. they wear out as well and can cause the handles to sag.

Once I installed those, the handles stay horizontal. I've got some pictures of the springs and the latches, if you want me to email them to you. (sorry I'm unable to post them here)

| | | | | Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 331 Member | | Member Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 331 | Kevin I have noticed with my 46 that if you have the inside handles set horizontal and you close the door by shutting it without using the outside handle that mine will sit straight. If I try to close with the handle it wont work. Someone also told me you can ruin the mechanisim by closing with the handle. Don't know if it is true or not but why take the chance
