The manual for my 46 says with or without field term grounded, you can touch the gen term to a ground and it should spark if you gen is charging. If no spark from the gen terminal cable, no charge. If it is sparking, it is your battery or Voltage Regulator..or a loose connection somewhere...

If so, we'd replace (or adjust) the regulator. If the engine runs with the battery cable off and the field terminal grounded, the generator is working. Did you try polorizing the voltage regulator?
