I am admittedly getting up in years and sometime my memory lapses (conveniently during 'Honey Do' sessions).

But, once upon a time I saw (I think) a turn signal unit similar to the strap on Signal-Stat units we use on our 'Bolts,' but this one had a self cancelling feature.

There was a small rubber tire that protruded from the lower side of the unit above the mounting bracket and rode on the lower edge of the steering wheel hub. The steering wheel hub turned the small wheel which in turn cancelled the turn signal.

Now, has anyone else seen a similar unit or am I really 'Going Over the Hill'?

52 Ted, My first car had what you are talking about. 1952 chevy deluxe. I think I remember the word guide on it.

52Ted,I have one it says autolamp 9200 on it.

I remember them from way back. The 55 I have now has one on it. Works slick. I don,t think you can buy one like that now new.

The Jim Carter Web Site has some type of toggle switch "underdash out of sight" turn signal set up for sale.

Have any of you tried that set up? I have the clamp on the steering column version but want a more original look if it's possible while still having the safety of turn indicators.

That self cancelling unit definitely used to exist. Back in the 60's, my Dad had turn signals installed on the '46 1 ton pickup we had, and that's what we got. As I recall, it worked fairly well when new, but later on, it didn't work as well. I have no idea why.

I bought the JC setup. It is as advertised, but for the money, I wonder if a good electrical guy could piece the parts together for a fraction of the cost. The kit comes with a very loud buzzer to remind you the signals are on. For a daily driver, I would recommend going with one on the column. You have to lean forward to turn on and shut off...sounds lazy, but I drive all in-town with lots of turns...

No slam on JC...as I said, as advertised with good directions.

Thanks for the JC info. We plan to use stovebolt in parades and as part of weekly public safety programs. It will not be a daily driver.

However, I plan to drive it at least once or twice a week just for fun.

Sounds good. The hidden switch will work well for that. It is nothing more than a 3 way stainless toggle switch.

Thanks guys for the self cancelling turn signal responses. I guess I'm not getting senile - yet.

I went on E-Bay and found that there are a number of different types for sale, including the one that self cancels. Problem is that the 'buy it now' price is $100! No thanks, I can do a lot of manual cancelling with my present unit for $100.

Our 61 American LaFrance had that same switch in it till just before it was "retired in 86.
As I remember,some Bozo broke the handle off gettin out of the cab.
No parts could be had easily and nobody then thought about makin it a Parade/Funeral Piece.
They just stuffed a Signalsat on it.

A '54-'55.1 switch and steering wheel would be an easy retrofit...

I have one of the buzzers that JC has in their kit. I had it wired into my aftermarket turn signal unit. It definately works and will let you know you need to turn the unit off.
