anyone had thier trucks done with dupont imron, this was sugested to me by a man who may do my paint, he said i just have to buy the paint and hed shoot it, but thats wat he recommended.. any feedback on it?

Imron is "polyurethane enamel", literally spray-on plastic. It is very durable, and has a "wet" look even when dry. Downside- - - -it's a little brittle, and will chip from a door ding occasionally. Don't let leftover paint stand in a spray gun, as it cures solid in just a few hours. Expensive, but very good quality. Peterbilt paints all its trucks with Imron.

It's a two part toxic, epoxy paint. Super shiny and strong like epoxy glue. I used Imron clear, long ago on the stock mag wheels and lower valance panel on a 72 Formula Firebird. It adds a super high gloss, strong finish. If your truck is perfect, (no waves or dings) I'd say go for it.

I was under the impression that any catalyzed paint was very unhealthy for you. I think the compound that is most common to 2k hardeners is iso-cyanate. This is the item you don't want in your lungs.

Great paint. I had a olds painted with it in the late 80's and it was beautiful. I was with the understanding that it was not the best paint to be breathing in back then but don;t know if it has changed. The guy that painted my car worked painting helicopters with the same paint. Very hard durable paint.

I understand that it must be painted with a positive pressure respirator. It's that toxic.

Isocyanates are contact poisons. They don't have to be inhaled; they can penetrate skin. An occasional exposure isn't going to cause a hobbyist to keel over in his tracks, but all-day, every day exposure to isocyanates by a professional painter can cause some pretty nasty side effects. One of the worst is the sensation that bugs are crawling all over your skin, due to the cyanide damaging nerve endings just under the skin. The creepy-crawly feeling never really goes away. A filtered-air "shoot suit" that covers all exposed skin and draws its air supply from outside the paint booth is the safest way to shoot those paints. High-gloss hardeners used in basecoat/clearcoat paint systems also contain isocyanates.

wait are u sayin that the truck paintede this way will be detrimental to me.. or only if i was spraying it.. because im not spraying it, just looking for a good paint

I think there are two messages here...

1) Imron is good stuff. And it's always good to pick from what your painter is comfortable and experienced shooting. Go for it, you won't regret it.

2) The responsible thing to do, especially if this guy is a friend (but even if he's not), is to make sure he's properly protected when painting. If he's a pro, he should know what equipment he needs. If he does this as a sideline, or for anyone else reading the thread -- be prepared. Full suit, positive pressure air supply is the way to go.

Once the paint is dry, the only hazard would be from looking at it instead of the road while driving.

Years ago I sold Dupont Paints. We had several customers that used Imron. Everything said above is correct. Imron was used primarily for Aircraft and Industrial applications. We had one customer that used it and came in one day saying, "Man that Imron is nice stuff but it makes me sick!" We found out that he wasn't painting with a fresh air suit. We sold his employer (We actually made him buy it or face a law suit) a fresh air suit the next week. If your friend recomended it he is probably aware of the side affects but make sure just to be on the safe side.

Imron is also what's used on railroad locomotives. It's formulated to withstand the high pressure power washers, which have some powerful cleaning solutions. If your painter prefers Imron, go for it.

The local paint store ownwer's son died a while back because he sprayed Imron without a mask, inhaled it and the stuff set up in his lungs, he died that same night. If you're planning on spraying Imron (or any paint that requires the use of a catalyst) or know anyone that is, please make sure that they at least wear a respirator with a charcoal filter.
