My '46 1/2 ton has a 4 speed transmission and that stupid "torque tube" U joint driveshaft thing.. which looks to be a regular u-joint inside a tube.

I need a supplier for the bolts, berrings and metal deal that you need to put the joint together.. looks identical to what my '50 1/2 ton truck had.. but i'm not sure that it IS identical.

Any help or sources are greatly appreciated!

Looks like that outfit wants you to buy the whole U-joint for $175.. which might not be a bad idea.. except I don't have $175 to spend on it, and all I really need are the berrings, the four bolts, and the two pieces that "close" the joint.

What I need is the bolts and metal deal circled in green and the berring that slips over the spot labled "A"... x2.

Fumblin,

If you're going the "parts" route, make sure you get the keeper things, with the fold-up ears, that hold the u-joint bolts in place.

The wife looks at me funny whenever I mention I need to buy yet ANOTHER part for one of the trucks.. lol.. i've discovered the higher the price, the redder her face gets.. so I like to get 'em as cheap as possible!

Those "fold up ears" deals are an absolute must have for anything that spins around at any kind of speed (like on the flywheel!) and i've already seen what can happen when those bolts come loose in a torque tube setup.. thats what happened to the '50 1/2 ton!

I guess a squirt of Loc-Tite wouldn't hurt on re-assembly, either.

John.. yea those end pieces and the berrings (along with the bolts that hold it all together) are what I need. Dakota has a '54 trans sitting in his parts pile with the torque tube still connected and is going to hook me up.

Jim Carters "universal joint repair kit" says it works with 1940 thru 1954 1/2 ton models, so i'm guessing they're the same parts for those model years.

Joker.. i've looked with great interest at the s10 tranny upgrade.. but it's probably a little out of my budget at the moment, especially considering i'd have to pay somebody to do it!

Fumblin: You need to find your wife a hobby of her own. That way, she does her thing, you do yours, neither asks the other one any questions, and everybody's happy! grin

Brakes?! We don't need no stinkin' brakes!!

Actually, i'll be messing with the brakes tomorrow. Today I got the regulator re-wired and replaced alot of the shot wiring.. up untill this morning, the engine was running with a jumper wire run from the battery to the coil.

Now she starts with the turn of a key and a stomp of the switch, and most importantly, the generator is working and charging the battery.

So tomorrow is slap on some exhaust pipe and a muffler and bleed the brakes day.

Don't forget to replace that cork seal in the torque tube. I have found that a large O-ring to replace the cork will stop the normal drip from the tube.
