Ok, just bought a car in Dix, IL - about 5 hrs south of chicago. I can go get the car myself with my cheyenne, but if anyone was travelling nearby with an empty trailer or car dolley anyway I'd just as soon save myself the trouble and pay someone to bring it towards ames (ISU) for me, or if they're heading towards southern or metro MN that would work too. Let me know if you would be travelling anywhere near there, I'd be happy to pay for your gas and some extra, easy way for someone travelling to recoup more of their trip at the horrendous price of gas. email me [email protected], thanks.

Car is an '88 Maxima, 5 speed, rolls just fine but has a thrown rod. Could be trailered or dolleyed, unfortunately no bumper dollies as it doesn't have a steel bumper.

If I don't get anybody that has an empty trailer to haul it, does anybody here need hauling from MN (near metro) to chicago or basically anywhere in IL? If I'm going to get it myself I'd just as soon recoup some of my trip.

Let me know guys, thanks.

I get down to Illinois every so often with my trailer, but I've never heard of Dix. Could it be Dixon? I have a friend there.

Probably is Dixon, I live up by Rockford, and Dixon is about 50miles south of here..Pretty much a straight shot north on HWY 39 to get you home, Steve

I found it now on the map, pretty much straight east of St. Louis. This might be a stupid question, but is a '88 Maxima with a blown engine worth the time and gas to drag it home to Minnesota? Must be a pretty nice car or you wouldn't be doing this?

5 speed maxis seem rare at best in MN/IA, and the automatics that nissan put in these cars (made by borg warner) are made out of tissue paper, at least thats what it seems like to me. Nissan even factory detuned the 3.0/Auto cars by ~30 HP because of how fraile the automatics are. I paid $202.50 for the '88, its midnight black with a black interior, PW, PL, PM, PS, PB, power sunroof and no rust (also rare in minnesota cars).

The motor going into it is essentially going to be free, the '90 maxima I was driving before it ate its last auto is worth more parts than whole so I'm pulling the motor and dividing the rest.

Sounds like you've got it covered with a running parts car and all. Only way to fly on that deal, as you'll have all the parts you need plus some. Was just wondering how practical it would've been if you had to haul the car home AND buy an engine. I'll bet it's around 1300 miles from Delano to Dix and back, and the way gas is going it'll run $400-500 in expenses just to run down there and get it. If you had to buy an engine and parts after that, the car can get over budget in a hurry.

$202.50? Good buy! You're an ebayer! I can tell by the increment it took to outbid the $200 bidder. LOL

Hey Kris,
I'm a Nissan dealer technician. I had an 88 Max with a 5 speed and the suede interior. Nice little car. I'm not sure why you're having trouble with their automatics, they are pretty good units. They were used in the Maxima's, Stanza's, Altima's and some Quest's without many issues.
If you need any advise, give me a holler, I've installed many of the VG30's over the years,
Scott
