My father-in-law sold me his '65 C-10 stepside for really cheap (700 bucks) and it runs! No critters live in it or anything. So I'll be on here asking alot of silly questions in the future, please be patient with me. For example, I have no idea what the engine is, its a inline 6, but no clue as to the C.I. or how to find out. The vin on the door panel is C1445N123699 but i dont believe that gives the engine size. Can someone tell me where to look for a clue? Your best bet is to search through these forums for threads talking about the external differences between the engines.

I believe the '65 C-10 stock 6 would have been a 230, though 292's were available as an option. Look for the engine serial number stamped on a pad on the right side of the engine to the rear of the distributor. The two-letter suffix in that number will identify the engine.

On a 292 the motor mounts are not in line.

the "o" being oil the "@" the dist. and the "=" the engine mounts, they are inline. Hope this strange drawing makes sense, as soon as the wife gets home with the camera, ill do better, hehe.

Welcome to the site. You can always do a hand-drawing. We've had those on here before - so don't be shy about it. We are all here to help and we've all been in the same boat (you'll see some of our strange questions after you've been here a while).
So, if a real photo doesn't tell the whole story, get out your pencil.

How about replacement parts? Are they interchangeable?
I found the casting number (3921968) but all the sites I went to said 230/250.... so no clear answer still. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 452 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 452 | There should be a little flat pad just to the rear of the distributor, over the fuel pump. You may have to scrape the slime off to see a number stamped onto this pad. This would be the serial number, in a form such as F0821TA. Those last two letters will tell exactly what the engine is. For example, in '65, TA=230 w/ 3-speed from the C10-20-k10-20 models.

As others have mentioned, the serial number will be on that pad near the distributor. The prefix letter will be the engine plant, the numbers will be the date code, and the suffix letters will identify the vehicle type and transmission.
