The bolts that hold the fenders on the bed of a 50's chevy truck.. those weird head bolts.. what do you call that head? Where can I find one?

Anybody have a method for getting the fenders off the bed without this tool? I tired putting a 1/2 inch socket on the nuts behind them, but the heads of the bolt just spun around.. tried to hold the head with a pair of vice grips, and it just slid off.

I tried to stick a big flat blade screwdriver in there, and it just tore up the inside of the head.

HELP ME PLEASE!

The best tool is the tool that fits.
Type "cluch head" into google search, there are several places you can order them from. They may even be avaliable from your local auto parts or hardware store.

I'll try the local autoparts joints tomorrow morning and see if I can get one locally.

I tried to google "clutch tool" and as you might expect, got 2 gazillion hits for clutch alignment tools.

ya might try clutch head screwdrivers , which is the tool ya want - available from any chev repop dealer, MacTools, SnapOn, and NAPA - even AceHardware!

Funny how a google search for "clutch head screwdriver" lands results at both ACE and Lowes, to a chart explaining what they are.. but if you search on their websites to find out if they carry them and how much they are.. nothing.

Guess i'll have to deticate my morning to finding them.

Fublin46, those clutch head bolts weren't funny to GMC when they put them on their trucks!

Also, Jim Carter has a set of 3 Part #MS313
$16.95. I ordered this set and they really come
in handy. Changed all the screws in the cab. Without these drivers I think I would have never
got the job done. Worth the money.

Lowes and SnapOn at least - prolly more, and maybe closer to home than the screwdrivers

Although I've found the smaller sizes for the various cab bolts from local hardware and auto parts stores, the only places I've found the large size for the rear fender bolts are from the specialty truck parts vendors. Chevs of the 40's carries them all in the socket/bit style.

Fumblin -

I have a 3/8 drive socket that fits the AD fender clutch heads, but I prefer using my driver. You may be too impatient to wait 3 days, but if you'd like to have this socket you can send me a private email with your address.

The drivers and sockets are easy enough to come by but does anybody have a source for replacement clutch head screws and bolts? i like the "bowtie" looks of the things and it's a nice topic for discussion at car shows.

Larry,

Brothers has pickup rear fender bolts (stainless and chrome).

Chevy Duty has a few sizes, as does Jim Carter.

Restoration Specialties has several sizes of bolts and screws (in the GM section of their catalog).
