if it is a 55 first series a nova has worked well for me. be sure and check the gear ratio. 3.11 or higher. the 55 first looked like the 47 thru 54 the 55 second looked totaly different. hope this helps. ron

Well it is funny you post this. I have a 55 first series.

I just picked up a 1977 camaro z-28 rear end. It runs 5 lugs and has drum brakes. Has a 3:42 gear ratio and will mount nicely. I plan on converting to 5 lug disc brakes up front later. This rear end only has 67,000 miles and came off a running and driving car.

If you want to go with a six lug look try the 73-87 K-5 blazer.

Hope this helps,

Chris

60-67 6 lug 1/2 ton truck rearends fit if you re-do the spring perches. A 3.07 ratio is available.

I have been told that the small Blazer rear will fit right in,or an S10 rear should also be close.Make sure you get the gear ratio you need.If you are running an overdrive tranny a 3.73 would be nice if you are runnig a regular 3 or 4 sp.,or a 350 or 400 Turbo./then you would probably want a 3.07 or close. In your 55 you should have 3.90 gears if they are stock.I am thinking about updating my 55 2nd to a later model rear.I am running a 350 engine and 700R4 tranny,so I will be looking for 3.73 or possibly 4.11 gears.Either one will be good highway gears with that set up.

The 700R4 and 4:11 gears are just fine for cruisin. It is an overdrive transmission.I am running 3:90s now and it cruises just fine.My last newer Chevy PU had the OD tranny and 4:10- gears,it worked out good.
