Welcome Chev4t6 I'm not sure what you are trying to do but the column and box come out of the truck in one piece. You have to take off the pitman arm and unbolt the box from the frame and remove the whole unit out the cab. If you already have it out and are rebuilding it I'm not much help there. but I think the inner column will not seperate from the box.

If you check the maintenance manual there is a pretty good rebuild discription there.

Good Luck
George

Yep the "inner shaft" does come out of the tube. You'll have tah take the whole steering colum off the truck and apart. Service Manual and the Steering rebuild Manual come in real handy.
also you might want tah look at this recent topic:

Welcome aboard 4t6. smile I have a 46 3/4 ton also. The steering shaft is removed out the bottom of the steering box. I don't know if it's possible to remove the shaft without at least partial disassembly of the steering box.

I would like to jump in here and ask a question.
I have a '40. doing a frame off and I have rebuilt the steering box and have bolted it back into the frame. I don't have the cab on yet, so the steering wheel is floating. I found that when I try to steer the steering box wants to spin at the mounting bracket. It doesn't seem as though I can get the bracket tight enough to keep this from happening. I noticed that the u-shaped bracket that bolts the steering box to the frame is a bit worn. Should there be some kind of binding material between the brackets to tighten this up? Or should I just wait to see what happens once the upper bracket is mount when the cab is in place? I did rebuild the drag links and maybe they are too tight? Any advice?

Thanks for the help so far fellow Bolters!

Kevin, you will not be able to hold that tight enough to steer it with out the cab or some sort of upper brace. I thought mine was loose to, but now that the truck is together, everything is fine. There is just to much leverage for the small clamp to try and hold. With the way the old frames flex, and cabs mounted with hold down springs, they may want a little movement at that location. Movement keeps things from binding up!

Joe, thanks for the reply. I will just try and wait for the cab mounting and then check it out.
It would have been nice to have the steering wheel working so I could steer the frame around instead of moving the tires. Oh well!
