I'm wanting to build an old truck for my next project, but need to learn more first. I'd prefer a 50's chevy pickup, but finding the right starting point for the right price will probably dictate what I choose. For now I'll be browsing the forums trying to learn as much as possible while I hunt for my project truck. Any info...books, websites, what to watch out for (good or bad things), etc is greatly appreciated.

| | | | | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 4,095 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 4,095 | i have a 54/3100 and it is a great truck. but only prduced for a year and half some parts are hard to find. look for a delux cab the extra windows help with visablity greatly, i have the standard cab. subscribe to classic trucks great ads and ideas. another even tho you may want to keep it stock is street rodder magazine for the ads. a lot of the parts places send their catalogs free if ordered on line. they are worth every penny even if you pay for them. subscrption to magazines are expensive in the but cheaper by far than newsstand. good luck this site has been invaluable wish it had been here 22 yrs ago when i started. I'll definately look into the part cats and browse the web more. I wouldn't have been able to do my camaro without the help from the guys at NastyZ28.com. I'm expecting to do a ground up with some minor customizations, so I won't be looking (nor want to pay) for a rare or 'all original' starting point. Just want a solid frame and cab that's not rusted through, and not missing any 'impossible' to find parts. Any recommendations for quality repro part vendors? I've also noticed there seems to be a lot of these trucks for sale in the north central US.

What I did...add up the cost of replacement parts when you look at a rust bucket...quickly...you reach the cost of a truck that is in much better shape...spend up front...you won't regret it.
