i have a 235 and i can't get the timing right it continually pings under load. could it be the vacumn advance i have watched it and seems to work. i have put in octane booster didn't help and high octane fuel. what else should i check? ron

I thought that my 250 was pinging at one time, and it was the column shift rattling. If you got a cloumn shift, that may be causing the noise.

no i have a hurst floor shifter this is real ping and might explain my poor mileage 12.2 on a trip with a 2.73 nova rearend and 15" wheels and tires. but thanks for the suggestion. if it was only that easy. ron

Set the timing on the steelball in the flywheel. if it still pings the compression could to high from the head being milled or ground to many times or carbon build up. If not that it could be pre-ignition from too hot of spark plugs, valves ground to thin, or carbon build up.

to get colder plugs what do i get?

i checked a number of things. spark plugs not oil fouled. they are bosch wr9fp should i change them. the plugs look really good.????????????????? ron

What are you running for initial and full mechanical advance?

all i know is that is vacuum. i t moves but doesn't stay in place for very long i am not sure how long it should stay that way when i i advance the throttle. ron

shouldn't stay long, just responds to engine vacuum, which changes quickly - just make sure [truck off] when you manually turn the dist if moves freely and when let go that it 'springs' back easily and all the way

colder plugs - just go to a good parts place and tell'em what you have, ask for a step or 2 colder

The vacuum works from 0 to 35 MPH then the centrifical weights take over in the distributor.you may want to try a lead additave to your gassssss tank.Not sure about the weights in that old dist
