At the end of the Martinsville race a few minutes ago, the announcement was made that the Hendrick Motorsports plane had crashed en route to the race, apparently with no survivors. No names yet- - - - - -but 7 fatalities by preliminary accounts.

Roger Penske tried all day to land at that same airport but it was socked in with weather and fog and he couldn't land. They apparently have no equipment for instrument landings. Rusty Wallace said he couldn't get into the airport last week to test either. He tried with both his plane and his helicopter.

sad day for everyone. This win will forever be a sad one for the whole team. We had a similar crash at Kirksville, Mo. just a few days ago. Bad weather and no Instrument Landing System at the destination airport. Some how 2 very lucky people survived the kirksville wreck. Mike

Very Sad. frown

For those that want details...

jayski.com has many details on his Nextel Cup news page.

nascar.com has a write up as well, right off the front page.

I've seen articles about it posted on Yahoo news as well.
