Hey Joker if you ever come down Hwy 281 to Lampasas, down the road south from Hico stop in a place called "Storms" right on the highway in the middle of town. Ain't found none better yet.

Local chain here named Spangles has good burgers. When in Texas, the big W was good, but that was 20 years ago.

We went on a cruise (drove my 55.1) last month over the hills (50 miles) outside of Fairbanks to the Monderosa, "Best burger in Alaska", and it is! We had 16 old vehicles, 8 of them were trucks. Stoped at Skinny [censored]'s Half Way Inn on the way down. Beautiful fall day, great ride!

Without a doubt the "Tomahawk Cafe" in North Vancouver, British Columbia. They grind their own roasts of beef and use "Danish Blue Cheese" instead of the processed rubber crap that McPuke uses and hand cut french fries (yup that's what we still call 'em up here) with the skins still on them (I guess that makes 'em healthier ... lol).

In San Diego, there's a joint called Classics Malt Shop. They've got some mighty tasty burgers. They've got regular burgers, ostrich burgers and buffalo burgers. The ostrich burgers are unbelievable. Taste great and less fat than turkey. The buffalo burgers are great too and also low in fat.
It's a 50's joint and people cruise and hang out on Friday nights. Cool cars and trucks.

Just north of Olympia, WA at the Nisqually exit off I-5 is a drive in called Tiny's -- or at least it was there 3 1/2 years ago -- opened around 1969 -- always eat there when I'm in the neighborhood.

Another place -- hwy 12 East off I-5. Spiffy's -- 1# burger and GOOD. It is a very nice restraunt now, but when he started it was one of those small mobile diners, good cakes and pies too.

Anyone from Ontario can tell you about Webbers. It's on the highway north of Orillia on the way up to Muskoka. They trucked a bridge that was used at the CN tower to span the highway so southbound customers could have a burger on their way home also. Apparently they sell 7000 burgers on a given friday night.

Wait a minute! How could Chevy be the best trucks in a world where you can buy a GMC?

And after taking that possibly controversial position, I'll go on to say that right now today, the best burger is at the Dairy Queen in Poulsbo, Washington. It’s called the Flamethrower or something like that. After long avoiding DQ I was forced to eat there a few weeks ago, and that burger was great! I've been back several times since.

In Iowa we have something called Taylor's Maid Rite. It is a chain started in Marshalltown many years ago. If anyone here ever watched Roseanne Barr, she and her erstwhile husband Tom Arnold opened a restaurant in Iowa and tried to run Taylor's out of business. She even used her television show to run them down, "Just don't bring me one of those loose meat sandwiches from Iowa. Ugh!" Well, Roseanne is gone and Taylor's is goin' strong. They are mighty good. Made fresh while you watch, the counter runs around the perimeter of the restaurant and the meat is cooked in a huge vat in the center. They do not have any "special sauce" just good old Iowa corn fed beef, ground, cooked and served on a bun.

Call me simple, but I love 'em. When you grow up with something and watch outsiders try to destroy it, it gets yer dander up. There are Maid Rite locations all over Iowa, and I am not sure how far out of state, but none compare to the original. Must be the atmosphere, or the fun of watchin' 'em make it right in front of you. Or maybe the fact that the building looks like something out of the 30s/40s (because it is!) and you half expect to see a '39 COE pulling a big rig wheel in and two guys (not one) in real trucking company uniforms complete with the officer's style hats come walking in.

Hey Guys,
If you are ever going through Carrizozo, NM, stop at the Outpost. Its a hole in the wall, but they have a good greasy burger with Hatch green chili and it takes three people to eat an order of small fries (homemade). They are a favorite of the bikers going through. The place has mounted game heads, and other western stuff hung all over the walls. I stop every time I go thru there. In Las Cruces there is Dicks Cafe and the Golden Bull. The Golden Bull has a big burger on a sour dough bun that is great (with green chili of course).

One of their onion-loaded greasy burgers and a big serving of their cut fries will cure all your digestive woes for a month or so. :p

We all know that any General Motors product with a bed is the best truck in the world, segment for segment. Don't matter if it's Chevy or GMC. grin

That being said, I'm quite partial to the greasy, sloppy, flame broiled burgers from "Mr. Burger" at the corner of Bloor St. and Park Rd. in beeeeeuuuutifulll South Oshawa, Ontario. The place has great skin on hand cut fries, awesome crispy yet greasy onion rings and all sorts of old car and diner memorabilia around the walls. It's a favourite with the local Old-time cruisers. Not to mention, the owner drives a nice bright-red '57 CoupeDeVille... grin grin

Regards,
Wannabe smile

Joker,

I hope Chris 55.1, Slow Rider TSheridan and others read this too.....

I would argue the best burger is not a burger...it is a good old Wisconsin grilled brat on a bakery fresh bun, ketsup, mustard maybe some relish... cooked anywhere you want to stop your stovebolt and fire up the grille.... grin

There is not a restaurant in the world that can make em like fresh grilled....The rest of the Good Ol USA just does not know what they are or how to cook em...In CA some place sold me one it was an Italian sausage...good...just not a brat...Watch the Packer Game...they are always on the pre-game show for tailgaiting...

But for a burger joint in the midwest, I'd have to say "Culvers"....Mush N Swiss with a hot fudge malt... Feed the whole family for $25...

Generally, if you see the local cops eating at a burger joint, it is probably the best in the area.

I just remembered the best burger in Wichita. It's the Black & Bleu at River City Brewing Co. 1/2 lb of meat with cajun spices and fresh bleu cheese on top. Cost is $7.45. Of course, they also serve several varieties of my favorite beverage.
Now I'm going to have to eat there this weekend. grin

Ok - here are some burger links:

Quote from :

http://home.mindspring.com/~ankroms/id5.html

Effie's Restaurant:

"This little hole-in-the-wall Burger place was recommended to us by Rving friends. WOW! The cheeseburger was EIGHT inches across--only order one!--and DELICIOUS! We shared, and had lots to take home."

That burger is huge - if you can finish it - you get a plaque or something to that effect. I usually order a "quarter burger" which is just that - a quarter of the Effie burger.

Here is a link to good burger sites across the nation:

http://www.fdu.com/cburger.htm
And of course the best way to eat a burger is to be sitting in a CHEVY Truck and listening to Jimmy Buffet.

In N Out is sooo yummy, I wish they wanted to expand their distribution to Denver, I already inquired about opening a couple... frown

Here in the Denver area, south in a town called Sedalia, there's a little hole in the wall called Buds Bar. Steamed buns, juicy fresh meat, but no fries...

If you're ever in Western Michigan, go to Saugatuck and eat at Wally's. Great Burgers, fresh caught lake Perch, good chicken.

I travel a lot, keep em coming-I'm going to print this one out and keep it in the glovebox.

Fred,

Are you waiting for someone to mention Kellers Drive In?

They're good. Good hamburgers on onion/poppyseed buns, fries, and cold beer. Good Chili/Cheese fries. And ugly car hops. What else is needed?

But if you come downtown Dallas. Tootsies is the best. They make homemade buns. Lots of meat. And a condiment bar to die for.
