I am rebuilding a 57BBW swb chevy and I need a rear end. I would like to know if anybody knows what the rear end rato and width is for the late modle 1999's to 2000 chevy caprice classic's and all the GM cars like it. Maby the Impala SS same year The 57 rear end was 62" brake to brake. Thanks for the help. [email protected]

I think they stopped making the Caprice/Impala in 1996.

hey gene try this it covers a lot http://www.chevytrucks.org/tech/rear_ends.htm http://www.chevytrucks.org/tech/ifs&rearend.htm this has some good info. the 55-59 trucks are closer to 61 1/2" wide. caprice/cop car 10 bolt is 62" 3.08 and 3.42 with positraction is common. i am working on a 56 stepside. 71-81 camero trans am seem to be one of the most common swapped rearends it is real close in factory width after varifiying for myself. hope this helps some.

Thanks newbie 56: I was not sure what year the caprice/impala ss was made I knew GM put some big engines in them and usually with a big engine GM puts a high rato rear end. They will have disk brakes and be less than 20 years old.

no problem gene i just helped a good friend swap a caprice rear disc brakes on the 8.2" rear in his 66 chevelle.

The (350ci) Caprices had a 2.93, the Impalas had a 3.07.

The Caprices had disc/drum, the Impala had discs all around, and the front discs were bigger than the
Caprice. That's why they had 16" wheels.

The Impala SS based on the big Caprice was only made from 94 to 96.

You could get a Caprice equipped the same as an Impala, you'll have to get a cop car though,
