Ever crawled under an old stovebolt and got eat up with fire ants. Dang near made me sick and I almost just burned truck and all just to get my revenge. Anyone know a DIY way of killing'em. I know gas poured down their holes will do it but thats not enviromentally friendly grin

Park a ford over the hill.

or you can buy some fire ant killer at the hardware/feed store and give it a couple of days. Spread it around the entire area your truck is in. In a couple of days the ants will go away to bother someone else.

They leave nice little red welt don't they?

yeah, I've bought several bags of the stuff and I believe they think its desert. Grits are working pretty good but you have to douse the hills every day late in the evening. Makes them swell up and die.... I found out yesterday that the cotton picking things go pretty deep in the ground. I made me a "T" handle with a point and when I find the hole, (usually in center of mount) I punch a hole down in the ground and pour in the gasoline. I did that on some in the yard and when I cut grass and tore up the mound I struck a match behind me.....I think thats working. Heck, my little gallon isn't nothing to what the Alaskan tanker dumped in the water!!!

Boiling water!
I've got a friend who is a chemist with Johnson & Johnson, and that's what he reccomends. Pierce the mound, like you've been doing, and flood it with boiling water, really saturate it. I've used a bait which really works, but I don't remember the brand name. It's at the farm, and I won't be there until Friday. It's used by breaking the mound open, sprinkling in a liberal amount of the poison, and flooding with water, but not necessarily hot. The mounds on my farm grow to 2 feet tall or more, sometimes!

Thanks Hotrod. The hot water beats pouring the gas down the hole. I've only seen mounds about half your size around here. I will "burn them up" and if you get the name of the "good stuff" let me know.

Had a nest of ground bees in our front yard. Took a spade, dug in, flipped the dirt to uncover the nest. Then, when they calmed down a bit, dumped a gallon of gas on it and threw a match. As far as I'm concerned, that's what those bastards get after stinging me six times for mowing the grass...

two bricks will work real good on fireants, just don't get your fingers caught between them when you slam them togather. if you don't catch your fingers in between the bricks it will squash the ants if not and you get your fingers, soak fingers in cold water till the swelling goes down.

tony'n weatherford :p grin
