I'm considering swapping out the front axle and rearend for a later model 3/4 or 1 ton.
I was thinking that if I could go with something
in the 50's that it would be relatively easy to
do. I helped a friend change a 51 3/4 ton Chevy
to 1/2 ton. So I figured it would be close to the
same process.

I'm no pro, but some of the obvious things on your list aside from some serious frame modification would be a whole new front clip,
If you really want a smaller rig, why not just sell the '46 and buy a smaller truck.
an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.

I don't know the numbers on Art Deco trucks, but on Advance Design trucks the difference is at least a couple inches.
