Question, I have a 1954 one ton GMC, 248 engine. It starts and runs good except when it sits a while the gas runs back down from the carb and it wont start untill I crank it enough to get the gas back up.Is the fuel pump supposed to have a back flow valve in it? Do they make an inline filter with a back flow valve in it? Any sugestions?

Are you sayin' it syphons back thru the needle and seat in the float bowl?

No the gas stays in the float bowl but it wont run long enough on that to pull the gas up from where ever it has drained down to. Some times it will but most of the time it wont.

Put a loop in the fuel line or an electric pump

There should be a check valve in the pump

The new fuel is really hard on pumps

Thanks, I have'nt replaced the fuel pump because the one on it pumps ok. I think it had this problem long before I got because I found a can of ether in the glove box. I will spend the bucks to replace the pump but I was'nt sure if I was going the right way and I hate to just start changing parts to find the problem.
