Needed to close the bed roll on the old Chevy. I know that stainless and chrome plugs are available but decided to make my own. I used a
1 5/8" rubber expansion plug, the ones you use in frost plug holes. They come with a big washer and a nut so you can crank it up tight. I reversed the washer to hide the stamping, placed a stainless fender washer over that, placed it in the roll and tightened it up with a stainless acorn nut after tossing the cad plated nut. Looks really neat, fits tight and only cost me about $5 each.

Got my chrome bed plugs from Chevy Duty for $3.95pr, massaged the hole a little to get it round, added a little blue silicone on the inside, and snapped them it...they look great

excuse me but what is a frost plug hole? I wonder if a half-dollar would fit it, I have the metal ones in mine but may get me some of those brake light ones,,,Fred

Got mine at Lowe's. Go to the section where nails and screws are. Look for the area where all the cardboard pull out drawers are and look for the "sinkhole" plugs. Think that 1 1/2" was the size I got. May have to bend out some of the tabs to match the unround bed hole but it'll stay in. Cheapo and they last a long time.

Surely you jest, joker! Frost plugs in engine blocks for us northerners where it can get cold. The frost plug will give before the block does if the water freezes in it. Had one go years back under the exhaust manifold of a SBC and I put one of those rubber expansion plugs in it and it is still dry. The tail lights in the end roll are a good idea. I've seen them on a few trucks and they make a big difference saftey- wise.

So when you're redoing your bed, how do you clean / prime the area inside the bed roll, to keep it from rusting out?

Or do you just fill the tube with dessicant before installing these plugs?

51 KY 3100 the bed is done and I think the roll does not go completely around. There is a a gap where air can get in. The plugs I made can be removed in a few seconds if need be. As far as rust prooofing goes, one trick we use on float planes in the motor mount (which is a many tubed structure like a birdcage) is to drill small holes and pour in LPS oil. We plug the holes and then shake, twist, roll the unit so the oil goes into all the tubes. We drain it and replug the holes. As these are flown mainly in salt water, the trick works very well.

theres some company that makes bed roll plugs that are lights. i think im going to do that actually when i get to the process of buying a new bed and all that.
