Got a new speedometer needle replacement from Chevy Duty to replace one on 51 speedo unit. The spindle that holds the needle looks fragile. Is there an easy way of doing this without messing up the mechanism? Would like to switch the faceplate from one unit to another, but the needle and hub are in the way. Any ideas?

I tried to redo mine and ended up messing it up. Finally sent it to Bowtie Bits and had them refinish the gauges and speedo. Best money I ever spent. Cecil.......

I found that the easy way to remove the needle is to give it a gentle counter clockwise twisting force against the stop, while at the same time pulling outwards. I have found this to be a very effective method.

Agree with Cecil. Took mine apart, broke the needle. Cleaned and prepped the gauge for new decals, etc. Messed up the odometer wheel parts. Ended up buying a rebuilt one. Worked perfectly and no more hassle!

I stopped short of replacing the odometer. It would be cool to start at zero again but you have to mess with the speed balance spring to get at the odometer. I took an expired one apart to find that one out.
