The former owner said his dad ( it was dads truck) used to run an 8 volt battery, hadn’t heard this trick before, anybody had experience with this? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,436 Moderator - The Electrical Bay | | Moderator - The Electrical Bay Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,436 | The experts will say to reclean all of the grounds. Use good wire straps ( (not the woven type).

My truck is 6v and spins over as fast as any modern vehicle with a 12v system.
Make sure all your battery cables are 00 gauge. Make sure all your connections are perfectly clean and tight with no frayed wire or crappy connections.
Make sure your generator and voltage regulator are in perfect working order (7.2v-7.5v while charging).
Make sure that the battery is at full charge at rest (6.2-6.4v). If your battery only registers 6.0v at rest, it's discharged and probably has a bad cell.
Make sure all ground connections are perfect, clean, and tight.
Make sure your starter is in top order as well.

Get the cable connections clean and tight, and use at least #0 AWG welder cable for hot and ground leads instead of conventional battery cable. In order for an 8V battery to work, the voltage regulator must be set to 9.5 volts or more. Headlights, points, charging system components, and other electrical parts fail quickly from the over voltage. Jerry
