Starting a rebuilt 54 GMC 302, starter has been rebuilt, battery cables have been replaced

It still cranks over really slow!
The former owner said his dad ( it was dads truck) used to run an 8 volt battery, hadn’t heard this trick before, anybody had experience with this?
