Can I tighten this linkage up or am I possibly missing a clip or other part? Any input is appreciated.

It seems to happen at slow speeds - if I downshift before slowing, then I avoid the problem. Once stuck, I can't move the shifter and it stays in 3rd until I stop, open the hood, and pull up on the shift linkage.
Wondering if it is in the linkage adjustment, but I haven't wanted to mess that up by tinkering with it.
Any ideas out there?

You can build up the worn parts with weld. Make shure all the linkages & bushings are free of play. The adjustment should be so the gearshift lever is in the same possition when you pull forward & back in neutral.

I have checked the shifter position forward/back in neutral, per my shop manual, and that seems okay. Checked the linkages... appear okay, so you are probably right on the box internals. Just not sure what I should expect to see.

The idea is to keep the selecter lever from getting between the 2 parts. If the shaft is loose you can rub the cover over some sand paper to narrow the holes.

I am talking about the arms the linkage bolts to. Years of shifting can loosen up the connections here, and even wear them significantly. Check to see you have good contact on the arms, and the keyway where it bolts.
