The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area The Tool Chest Impact wrench will work with 8gallon compressor?

When I was looking at the impact wrenches in the store today...the little chart on the shelf said that they wouldn't work on anything less than 25gallon tank and would only work intermitantly.

1) Who uses an impact wrench continously? Aren't the supposed to BE an intermitant use object?

2) How come the ones I have rented work fine on my little Delta 8gallon compressor?

So I went ahead and bought the air one since the electric ones were just about $200. The air one is only $70...and since I will only use it on my scooter and my truck...should be fine.

Anyone know if I'm going to run into problems?

they will power it, just mabey not too long. i think they don't want you to use them a lot and burn up the compressor. it would prob be ok for a couple of bolts but what's the advantage of the air tool over hand tools at that point? i used a friend of mine's pancake air comp with a air impact putting in lag screws for his deck. it would do one most of the way then you would have to wait till it pumped back up and do another. they do use a lot more air than a air gun, but not as much as a air sander the one i had would run about 3 or 4 seconds on his pancake tank.

You will just have to wait for the compressor to catch back up , All pneumatic tools are air hogs , they prob recomend the 25 gallon tank for the volume of air it can hold , heck i have a 80 gallon tank and if working hard with air tools I have to stop an let the compressor catch up an after a while i will STOP , take 5 let the compressor cool down and get a cold drink and relax for a few.
for removin lug nuts and workin on your scooter youll be fine .

The advantages of a large tank are stated above.
The smaller tank will get up to pressure faster.
What you should be concerned about is the Cubic ft. per min. at 90lbs. Your air tool should have a minimum, required rating on the box or somewhere.

As for why do I need it for just a couple of nuts/bolts. I need this for the big stuck nuts. The scooter has had a couple so far...the flywheel nuts and axle nuts. They are on so tight...on parts that spin...that an impact is the best way to break them free. Same thing for the bigger bolts on my truck frame/bed that will need to be freed up.

Good note about the letting the compressor rest. Hadn't thought of that before. My little baby must be pretty good...she handled the roofing gun I used to shingle my whole roof...and the partial patch I put on a friend's deck.

Today I have to go find a 23mm impact socket...sheesh going to have a fully stocked mechanics garage soon...:^)

It makes no difference how big your tank is.You gotta have a compressor that will keep up.CFM at 90 PSI is what you gotta look for.True,you can use an impact with a small compressor,but not for very long.

Mine goes to 90..its rather small. I like it for taking bolts off....I always ratchet down by hand after tightning with the air tolls . other wise its ok..Except for the cutting disk..Dont even bother using that thing, get an electric one. When I use the cutting disc the compresser seams to just run and run and run..
