The start switch is a simple chrome push button about 1/2" in diameter with two wire terminals on it. It is usually mounted on the extreme left side of the dash. You'll need to use something like a marine rated high amperage switch, as the momentary current draw of the pull-in winding of the starter solenoid is around 40 amps. Be sure to wire the circuit through the neutral safety switch to avoid starting in gear.

Ok, thanks for that information. I think it goes through a starter relay on the firewall, but not for sure-waiting
On a book I ordered for the exact wiring diagram.

This one resembles the original equipment switch very closely, but it's only rated for 15 amps. I'd suggest using it in combination with a solenoid switch mounted on the firewall near the starter motor.

Here's a suitable solenoid if you're running 12 volts. Similar designs are also available for 6V operation. Where is Wadley AL located? I'm just above the Alabama state line near I-65, about 40 miles NW of Huntsville.

If you have a stock working neutral safety switch like Jerry mentions above, use it. If you don't and have a really hard time finding one, expand your search to include switches from 1952-56 Pontiac and Oldsmobile switches from cars using HydraMatic transmissions. Added bonus is that those switches came with a third terminal to operate backup lights. I had one from a 54 Olds in my 57 GMC.

'57 GMC 102, Original 347 V8, HydraMatic, 3.08 rear gear, added A/C, disk front brakes, HEI, AFB carb, '98 Honda Black Currant paint. T-boned and totaled 10/12
'52 GMC 152 Stake Bed, Original 228, SM420, added A/C, HEI, disk front brakes, '67 Chev 3.55 rear gear. Gets used as a real truck.

Thanks for all the good information. Wadley is about
50 miles north of Auburn University.
