Request for photos… Considering adding a box onto my 46 running board for a few things like jack, lug wrench etc and am looking for inspiration. Did a couple of searches but came up completely empty, even though I’m sure they are not that unusual…. If nothing else might adapt an old wood ammo box…..(Winchester, Peter’s, etc)
I think a vintage style tool box would look good there, assuming there's enough room between the door and rear fender. Example.

Looks like they have one that is just a storage without the drawers and such. I bet a bottle jack and collapsable lug wrench would fit in it. I might have to get one.

I collect vintage Craftsman tool boxes, many of these would be the perfect size for what you want to do. You can find something like that at Yard Sales and Flea Markets pretty cheap.

I question what happens when it rains or you wash the truck? Would these old tool boxes be water resistant enough?

Most of the ones I've seen, the lid laps over the box so that MOST water would run off. Maybe some sort of gasket could be glued around the edge.

When I restored my '50 COE the previous owner had welded straps to the frame just behind the cab on the driver's side. A home made tool box was attached. A friend gave me this socket set box, measuring 20x8.5x6 inches (see attached pictures) which I painted semi-gloss black. Note that the front panel drops down, giving good access to the bottom of the box. I use it store a fire extinguisher, rear axle lock nut tool and various other tools. It is not water proof but water "resistant" and will stay dry with washing or brief run in the rain.

I think making one out of wood and helping to making it aged would be simple. I have the image of one in my head. I know it does you no good there but persevere.samples.

Those are serious tool boxes, I can imagine a wood box “under” the bed would have a hard life. My wife recommended nothing on the running board as she likes to sit there from time to time (not while I’m driving…) Chuck
