Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2019 Posts: 449 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2019 Posts: 449 | I've finally settled on a 250 (thanks Hotrod) for my 65 C10. It appears that the Rochester was the factory carb. But they were commonly replaced by a Carter YF back in the day, correct?
Also, is it hard to rebuild a Carter YF with a kit? i.e. Can it be done by a rank amateur? Do the kits have good clear instructions?
Thanks

He usually recommends boiling the hard parts in a bath of Dawn dishwashing liquid and water, followed by a thorough hot water rinse and LOTS of high pressure air through every passageway in the carb. Solvents and "carb cleaner" sprays simply soften the crud- - - -massive volumes of air blows it away. Once the parts are surgically clean, follow the assembly instructions and adjustments to the letter. For instance, a Rochester Quadrajet has something like 22 adjustments to make during assembly, and a lot of them will have a cumulative effect on the accuracy of the next adjustment. A Rochester B or a Carter YF isn't quite that complicated, but the same principle applies- - - - -be careful, and OCD accurate! Jerry

I hadn't rebuilt a carburetor since college and I rebuilt my YF a few years ago. It was one of the easiest repairs I've done on this truck. 8000+ miles later it's working fine.
