I was at the ATHS truck meet September 22 in Winchester and saw several interesting GMC large trucks there; mostly road tractors but a super nice 1979 General tow truck. I am trying to find a knowledgeable GMC person that was there. I took lots of photos but one GMC road tractor had no identification on it. It was a dark green 9500 series with dual headlights and a Virginia license. Could anyone that was there tell me the year of the truck so that I can properly identify it in my computer photo file? Any history pertaining to trucks or automobiles of any kind is my driving passion and I hope to find lots of information in the stovebolt forums. The Green GMC with 6-71 Detroit is Fred Craig's, late 50's truck I believe.

The blue GMC General wrecker is D*ck Schaffer's.

Hey Grigg, thanks for the answer. You are almost a neighbor. We are about 60-miles apart. I'm 22-miles west of Covington. I think we are talking about two different trucks. There were three green GMC's in that area. A 1959 860 COE sleeper semi, a '59 short nose 860 with a grille like the smaller trucks had that year, and the one I am wondering about. It was more of a conventional cab with a high flat nose with dual headlights, and a flat bed. It was a 9500 series with an antique Virginia license, A3455. I suspect the truck was about a 1972 model but I have no way of identifying it. I have thousands of photos that I am in the process of putting into my laptop computer (which is not this computer. This is an ancient desktop that has seen better days. I don't have the laptop hooked into the internet.) I try to ID every pic with year, make and model if possible, but we could not find any paperwork on this truck. I wondered if it belonged to Mr. Craig but he had papers on his other trucks. No, I don't know who's truck that green GMC flat bed is. The one with the flat bed that was narrower than the rear wheels were wide, looked a little odd to me.

It too has a 6-71 Detroit, my guess is mid 70's. Either **** or Fred should know who belongs to it.

You are talking about one of my favorite type of trucks. I'm a big 9500, C-90 fan. If you could post the picture, I may be able to help. Those trucks were made from '66 to about '77, maybe early '78, altho some years are identical to others.

Also, I recently posted a link to a picture of a GMC 9500 Extended Hood under the topic "I got a few questions" (Approx 18 down).

In my post above I put the name of two guys who own trucks, one is Fred, and the other is the nick name for Richard, seems now "Richard" has turned into ****.

Bill, the flatbed has the same grille design as the photo you posted. The nose appears to be shorter but that could be from shooting the photo almost headon. I can probably print the photo and scan it in so I could attach it to an email. Would that work?

Grigg, I muddied the waters when I first said the truck was a road tractor. Sorry about that. If you want to provide Fred Craig's phone, he could probably ID the truck. Thanks.

Grigg, is there a picture in the Winchester album that would clearify the truck that Jay is talking about? For some reason I am having trouble getting to the pictures.
As far as the ****, did that automatically happen when you typed in Mr. Shaffers name,LOL.

The truck that you took a picture of, most likely is a shorter nose. That would be a standard 9500. The picture I posted is a rare "Extended Hood" model or "Long Nose" truck.

Anyway you could get a picture to me would be fine, but I have a feeling that someone will be able to produce one from the show soon.

I need to get to that show someday. It's about 3 1/2 hours from my place.

That truck does not have the original directional lights on it, or in the original location anyway. That is a good way to tell what year, or year ranges a truck is. If they are the original type and just moved, I would need a closer picture as they made 2 round types, but it would be no newer than '69. It does have the older style cab marker lights. I believe it was in '76 that they change to a newer style. It does looks like it has the older style side hood emblem tho. A picture of the emblem may help more. Of course contacting the owner would tell for sure.

Said he took the fifth-wheel off and mounted the flatbed. He thinks the truck is early 70's; I am thinking '72. I called him but got no answer; I will try again later. That will be better quality than posting it on the forum and this new member doesn't exactly know how to post a photo.

Bill Marlow, you must be the owner of the yellow and navy COE. How did you ever come up with that color combo. I would never have dreamed a vehicle could look half that good in that combination. That is one sharp truck! I love it!

Jay, thanks for the compilment. To be honest, I just sort of thought it up. I actually new the colors before I had taken delivery of it. Its no where near stock but thats ok.

I'd sure like to get a better look at the hood emblem. If it is as old as I think it might be, I would say that the truck is more like a '67.

But I guess Buzz will have the real answer.

Jay, I keep telling William his truck is sooooooo ugly he must be embarrased to tears and that, as a friend, I would be willing (for a nominal fee) to cart it off and thus end his embarassment. It hasn't worked yet and you're not helping.

You would be of more help if, instead, you would tell him that merely looking at a picture of his truck has forced you into counselling. And that he ought to consider my more than gracious offer (an offer so generous that I should be sainted for even offering it!)

In all seriousness, it is a beautiful truck. Even if he does trailer it to shows... (Can you believe that???)

I think he was just having a bad day, and he knew that when he got off work he had 200 Christmas trees to plant. We will let him slid a little on this subject.
As far as him being pleased.....maybe an ice cold Becks and a 50 ring Dominican.....driving his fire truck.....or even a 1941 Chevrolet Military Dump, just to name a few.

Bill's coe rode great, at least in the back.. I will always treasure that ride, being with Carolyn in an old truck is about as good as it gets..

The ride in 42 chevy(John) was great too..I need that baby at my little country place....

Fred -- careful, I think this is a blood feud in the making. The two Johns and William Marlow have some ... um ... unresolved issues here ... More Becks, 50 ring gauge Dominican smokes and more Becks might help. But this could get uglier before it gets better.

And about those trees ... John M was out there on his hands and knees, digging each tree in with his bare hands, by himself, until well after dark. I think a little compassion is needed here. And then the next day, he got up at the crack of dawn, made breakfast for everyone in the house, and went back at it. So go easy on him. He should be sainted, not abused. SAINTED, I say.

So stew on THAT.

Yep, I'm readin it and lovin it. I got my new buds, John G and Joker on my side of them train tracks. By the way Fred, the honor was all mine in respect to the ride in the parade of power. I only wish I had more appropriate seating in the back of the truck for such distinguished guests like you and Carolyn.
Now back to Poohbah.....where is the abuse, dirty knees? And why so many people for breakfast on plantin day??????
