The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts 5 speed in a 46?

I just was given what is supposed to be a 46 big bolt. Is definitly the right body style and all and is titled a 46, has a 2 speed rear and was shortened way up and used to skid logs out of the woods! Now here's my question, PO said it has a 5 speed trans? I have not seen one with a 5 speed before and as this thing is free but not running I can't be sure, yet. I am bringing it home today though and hope to find out then. Was this an option back then?

yep. 5 speed spicer tranny. super heavy duty type of gizmo. gear number 5 was NOT overdrive, but rather direct, however, the gear set is available to make 5th gear overdrive.

My 57 6500 has a 5 speed and a 2 speed which is a first for me. Am I correct that some old bolts came with 5 speeds from the factory?

When I first looked at my 56 I was told that it was a 5 speed turned out to be a 4 the standard SM420. I had planed to put a Fuller 6 speed in it but now think I will use a spicer 5 speed overdrive it will be the easer install as the spicer comes with a drive line brake like the SM420 and I have been told they were used from the late Forty’s to the early Ninety’s.
