More excitement.....assembled the countershaft, all new nos parts and behold none of the three lock rings will fit (.128" / .132" / .138" ) got out the measuring tools and the stack up leaves only .118" . I've checked and re-checked the assembly and no gaps, no debris. I just dis-assembled enough to remove the countershaft drive gear and spacer. Off to the machine shop I go. Going to remove.012 from the overall length of the spacer which measures .875" .

Doing is learning.....

Anyone else ever run into this problem? Suppose its just the stackup of the manufacturing tolerances on the individual components.

Machining done and the countershaft reassembled. Ended up removing .015" and using the .132 lock ring. Glad that's over with now to work on the mainshaft.

Yes, I managed to get it together without damaging anything. I started "collecting" all the SM420 NOS Internal parts ( except cover ) back in July 2015. Looking back I really got caught up in identifying, locating, and then buying the parts. It sort of became as addiction I think...but hey, it was fun. In reality it looks like the only parts I actually needed for the repair was the countershaft, the reverse idler gear and the mainshaft and of course the bearings and gaskets. Since I have all these parts, I might as well use them for the rebuild. Starting on the mainshaft tomorrow.
